Signed by Cowboys Mike Pettine to join Cowboys staff

[StarLord]

Pettine turned this job down in the spring but felt so bad for Parker watching this mess that he decided to come to the rescue.

That's exactly how this reads to me.

[charron]

I hope he helps. Id say it couldn't get worse but they'd prove me wrong.

[CTcowboy203]

At least CP admits he needs help with this hire.

Whether forced or not, when someone can say hey I’m struggling here to put everything together and recognize he’s failing and genuinely wants to get better it’s a huge sign.

Also a good sign pettine values the relationship enough to help- and the money I’m sure didn’t hurt.

There was no upside for Pettine in the Spring; if this year's model was an early success, Parker would get all the credit. Now that the defense is utterly flailing after five games, any significant improvement hereafter will be attributed to Pettine's abilities.

[starz88]

I’m sorry but this cannot hurt. Has a ton of experience and you never know more eyes the better. Someone has to help this defense and coordinator some im for it, better maybe than the controversy off firing a first year DC on the job??? Idk, least it’s something lol

Or was this a directive from above?

It got to the point where it had to be.

[ShortRound]

Dragged the man out of retirement

[Praxit]

LOL. The wiz kid needs his hand held.

....hey ...hey .......no Giants fan allowed .....

[plymkr]

I thought Schotty said the solution was in the room.

Maybe he meant the phone was in the room to call Pettine

[plymkr]

I don’t know much about this guy. Is he any good?

[CATCH17]

They’ll ask him to punch a time clock & he will quit.

Why would someone who is retired have any motivation to assist to their resume?

You and the funky bunch are reaching here

[MonkeymanWoes]

Are they though?

Starter isn't a particularly effective term, but fewer than half on Dallas would start on any good defense (QW, Hooker, Thompson, Downs, JPJ, Eze?)

The gap in talent between a defense like Dallas and a defense like Houston or Minnesota is startling.

Yes, largely due to penalties and mistakes.

[dblock125]

Dragged the man out of retirement

Jerry made him an offer he couldn't refuse which included a 50% off coupon to Parker's master class

[StarLord]

The good news is we have no where to go but up!

[TheMightyVanHalen]

Why's he available then?

He retired, Mickey. Or maybe he wanted to take a few years off to charge his batteries. Either way I don't think he put his name in all the hats for available coaches.

[DuncanIso]

So what is everyone's thought on this? He seems to have an extensive resume and lots of experience. I can't imagine it will hurt, I mean we can't get much worse? Right?

He will be calling the D plays soon.

[infamousstyles]

It can't get worse... right?

[DuncanIso]

Long-time NFL coach Mike Pettine is joining the Cowboys defensive staff, reuniting with coordinator Christian Parker. As the Packers defensive coordinator form 2018-20, Pettine gave Parker his first job in the NFL in 2019. When hired, Parker attempted to talk Pettine out of retirement. Now six weeks into the season, Parker has a veteran coach as a sounding board.

Good stuff!

He was sitting all the way in the back.
