Joe Buck & Troy Aikman had an argument surrounding their ESPN contract situations

For one, Troy ran one of the most basic offenses the NFL has ever seen. He wasn't checking in and out of plays like today's quarterbacks. The game is very different today. So I don't want anyone from the 90s in the weeds of player personnel or development UNLESS they've gone the coaching or organization route for many years after their playing days.

Curious, what exactly makes you think Troy could evaluate and compare 4 different offensive guards or outside linebackers to make a third-round decision? What does he know about managing a salary cap or negotiating with an agent and structuring a long-term contract? Does he know how to speak business at a level necessary for the hundreds of companies from different industries and purposes that the Cowboys do business with?

The answer to all that is....he's not qualified beyond just being a figurehead with a cushy salary that makes public appearances.
Duh, he played for the Cowboys; he would be super great. I wonder if Matt Milen can make a comeback and help Dallas?

Okay...that's fair. They have different jobs...so not sure why you were comparing them so closely.

From some of your other comments...it seems Troy offends your sensibilites in several ways. That's fine too.
Love Troy in general, even met him on a few occasions.

It's not him I'm so critical of as much as the general them of "hey, let's get one of our former great players to run our team!"

Sure, it's cute to see John Elway do it. And John Lynch gets WAY too much credit for basically hiring great talent evaluators and benefitting from a tremendous head coach.

The only great player that truly did it properly was Ozzie Newsome, who jumped into the front office right out of his playing days and learned the craft for years first.

But overall, when Jerry's gone, I truly hope Steven will go get us a Schneider/Roseman type to run the entire football side of things. I'm not holding my breath.

The good news for Aikman is he will have plenty of options if the MNF gig goes away. Replace Romo/Watt at CBS. Go back to Fox. Or take over for Al Michaels on TNF. Because while Michaels is an all-time great, it's really getting rough for him now.

Edit: Just realized that might not work since Aikman provides analysis and Michaels is the play by play guy. Still, maybe he'd replace Herbstrieit.

I'm sure they'll wheel him out as long as he has a pulse...like Ozzy Osbourne.:)

What does Buck have to with Troy not being offered an extension? Or did Aikman think Buck owed it to him condition his re-enlistment on him getting a deal too?

Herbstriet is the highest paid top dog of all analysts now. No way Troy replaces him.

I can't remember but I think Aikman had a lot to do with Buck originally coming to ESPN. I think Buck liked Fox because he could do the World Series and ultimately went with ESPN because of Aikman. I also think Buck left Fox a year early to join Aikman.

Can he evaluate talent? No.

Does he know how to run an organization? No.

He was a great player, though somewhat overrated, a million years ago. That qualifies him for nothing. That has zero to do with a front office job.

That's like saying Bill Belichick would have been a great linebacker because he was a great defensive coordinator.

We need a Howie Roseman or John Schneider, not a token former player from a time long past.
Seriously?

Learn football

Superb post. And Ozzie definitely did it the right way and at a high level.

Denver won the with only a 168 total yards. Amazing what a defense and a good HC can do.
