Under what circumstances can this defense become good?

Good defenses are built around a core of players that have been together for at least a few years. They know each other. They become like a family. Each of them wants to succeed for the sake of the others.

I have known of a few very rare exceptions. In the 70s Washington's coach, George Allen, traded away several draft picks for veterans who bonded quickly under their volatile HC.

The Cowboys must play selfless team defense. This cannot be initiated by a coach. It must come from the players themselves.
True, but the scheme has to be viable first.

If nobody currently on the 2 deep depth chart, plus nobody currently on the coaching staff, is still in Dallas next year, there's a chance they could be good.

Complete re tooling, top to bottom, is the only option with a chance at success

The Bucs game was a total cringe, especially for our defense. Yet, we all know Christian Parker is new and a lot of players are new. Players need to commit their defensive scheme to muscle memory, and it doesn't happen overnight. Did I think they would be a lot farther along than they showed? Absolutely. It was painful to watch how they kept missing assignments and getting burned. It could be a train wreck season, but I wouldn't say at this point that that's inevitable. Maybe these guys can still gel and become cohesive and thus a lot better. I don't mean to post an empty pep talk. I'm not saying if they work hard, they can definitely become a top 5 defense. But things can change quickly in athletics. We've seen teams stink it up in the first part of the season and then get it together with winning streaks down the stretch. And I don't think it would be smart to fire a defensive coordinator after only 5 games.

I'm not saying I'm convinced that this D will definitely become great. I'm just wondering if it might be able to improve, thus giving this team a better chance to win. I also don't think the NFC East is looking like all that strong of a division, at least it isn't from what we've seen so far.
  1. Acquire an NFL caliber pass rusher
  2. Let me know when 1 happens and I’ll figure out the rest

The talent is there to be a much better defense. However, CP has messed with these young men's heads to the point they have no clue what to do. The proper thing to do is cut bait with CP and his regime of defensive coaches. Then let Pettine take over and keep whatever of CP's staff he wants to retain. But the front office didn't have the guts to do the proper thing.

Now we have a not ready DC in Parker that has a babysitter. I understand they will both be up in the booth calling plays. Schotty should be held accountable for hiring Parker and causing the crap show that followed.

There is nothing this D does well. But the first step they can take is actually improving their effort and determination.

So far, their body language is as poor as their play. Grow a pair pf balls and decide you are actually sick of being a punching bag, and start to physically and mentally fight.

The Xs and Os are important, but if you don’t have guys that care and are tough, they won’t be able to stop a runny nose

Good stuff. I agree completely w/ your 2nd sentence.

Now, I know college play isn't everything and sometimes players simply can't make the jump. However, if you go back and look at their college tape, this is not anywhere near how they played. There is a huge reason Malachi was climbing the draft boards. He has massive talent. I didn't expect him to be a cross between Myles Garret and TJ Watt immediately, but for him to have this little impact means something is wrong.

And the body language clearly comes from a scheme that doesn't work.

True, but the scheme has to be viable first.
And you also have to have the players whose skills are compatible with that scheme.

I don't think that Jerry Jones as ever considered that fact when drafting or choosing a DC.

Better line play is what is needed. More pressure, better contain and do a better job setting the edge. QB have been having way too much time to pick us apart or they get a huge run. Get the QB nervous and better things will happen.

New Ownership and Coaches

They can't. Best we can hope so is mediocre....if Parker uses these 10 days dissecting his scheme and talent, figuring out a scheme that would best use his best players and cover for his worst.
Pettine coming in, is a great move. I'm assuming he spent the weekend in the film room with Parker and Uber eats. It's become more of a mind thing, in my opinion. Doesn't seem like the players have bought into parker....the lack of preseason reps and several injuries have made it tough on him. He should have brought in a mentor type coach from the jump. It's easy to be cocky as a young coach and very hard when you get slap of reality across the face.
For month’s it was all about what a great move bringing Parker in was. Now, again, zero games with this defense and Pettine is a “great move”. It’s a move. That’s all, for now.

You thought Parker was great, not me. No experience as a coordinator, that's why it's a great move. Hell, he even tried bringing him when he got the job. That's why it's a great move, he knew he needed the help, now he has it.....

Only if the other team is limited to 6 players on offense and Dallas has their 11. At least, that would make it competitive.
