Given your response, you're not understanding the analogy, then. It's not being said in the context of where we still have input and regulatory bodies, or some semblance of control. It's talking about a very real scenario where artificial superintelligence (which is the goal) has taken over and is seeking out its own pursuits. If that sounds too science fiction for you (understandably), then you really need to listen to where the technology is currently at, and why it has all the AI industry leaders collectively asking for oversight, even freaking Elon Musk. That's a poor example of project intent and unintended collateral damage. Every project in the U.S. approaching the scale of a road build faces numerous environmental impact studies. The anthill may not get consideration, but wildlife safety will come into question, and without a doubt, human safety will be paramount to the project.
With all the brilliant minds involved in the AI-sphere, I believe they can come up with programming triggers packaged within their coding that flag deviations and provide resolutions toward terminating rogue AI activities. AI is a man-made phenomenon, not a natural occurrence, and the minds behind the science should be held to account for their creation by an oversight body that includes fed gov't and industry leadership. If that means tapping the breaks to understand the scope of work to be deployed, so be it, but this a global race and not everyone is looking to use AI for the greater good.
This is why it so critical for the U.S. to lead in this field and never look ahead at the competition, particularly the bad actors on the planet with the ways and means to build out scaled and destructive forms of AI models.
People continue to mistake thinking AI is just another technology, a widget, or a product. This is not synonymous with the nuclear arms race. This is a technology that has the ability to spiral out of control by its very nature of what it's created to be: totally autonomous...self-governing, independent, or able to operate without direct or limited external control.
