What does a rebuild look like?

So....it is becoming more and more obvious each week that this team is going nowhere. Yes, the division sucks so there is actually still a path to the playoffs, but we are talking about an 9-8 team squeaking in and being one and done at best. That simply isn't good enough.

I have seen a lot of complaints that Dallas hired an old coach stuck in the past but we have to admit that they at least hired some up and comers, or at least guys thought to be up and comers in Adams and Parker. People raved about the additions and the fresh input. What we have learned is that it comes down to the fact that regardless of the coaches, and regardless of the players, the problem is at the top. Jerry and sons simply do not know how to build a Championship level team. The success of the 90's had nothing to do with Jerry....it was due to Jimmy Johnson. PERIOD.

Jerry has been talking lately about still looking to be a buyer at the trade deadline....just how delusional can one man be? It is time to blow it up and start looking to build for the future. We obviously don't have a QB of the future here, our RB is a journeyman, our TE's are not impactful, and the WR's aren't worth their cap hits. The defense is loaded with bad contracts or star players in positions that are way down the importance list. Of course all of the draft pick equity we got from the Parsons deal has been used with predictable results. And the deals we made for Porter and Jones are looking really dumb given the current status.

The wish list would be that Dallas looks for a true GM who brings in a coach of their choosing. A new coach is no guarantee. Jim Harbaugh was thought to be a good coach....his teams have floundered. Sirianni looked to be a genius after coming in and winning a Super Bowl but now is starting to feel heat. Sean McVay is a supposed genius but his preseason favorite has the same record as Dallas does. There are examples all over the place. I know some would love to see Aikman brought in as a GM....and it possibly looks like things could open up in a way that this would be an option. Troy's contract hasn't been renewed with ESPN and his consulting gig with the Dolphins is over as there was no long time agreement. I think Troy would be a great fit....he isn't afraid to tell Jerry when he screws up and he would bring a certain level of responsibility to the team. I also think Troy has a good idea of who some up and comers are in the coaching ranks. I am not sure who would be a great pick moving forward as a coach. There are some established vets out there like Tomlin, Gruden, Pederson, and McDermott. You have some young guys who failed at their first HC job that are rebuilding their resume like Brian Flores, Vance Joseph, and Jonathan Gannon. And the young guys that are rising up the charts like Chris Shula, Klay Kubiak, Declan Doyle, Ejiro Evero, Anthony Weaver, and Grant Udinski.

The first thing we need to do right now is look at every player on the roster to see whether they are a part of the future or just a placeholder. We need to try and maximize our draft picks by trading anyone with value that isn't going to be part of a core rebuild. Taking our lumps with the salary cap over a period of 1-2 years so we can start over is part of the process.

Generally, the best way to cut cap space and increase draft picks is trading anyone that has value that won't be a significant part of the team in 3 years. To me, the ones we should keep on offense are Booker, Beebe, Bass and Guyton. Smith has value in trade for sure and we need to learn that having the highest paid G in the league isn't where you want to allocate your resources. Other guys that should be kept are any of the cheap young vets that may be place holders until we get replacements. Spann-Ford fits here on offense. Lamb and Pickens are great players but I don't see them being players for us in three years. Ferguson certainly isn't worth his salary here but I doubt he would bring much if anything in trade. Obviously the elephant in the room is Dak and his contract. We probably have to keep him for a year or two until we find our replacement and to lessen the cap effects.

On defense, we probably have to keep Williams due to his contract. I would keep the young pass rushers Ezeiruaiku and Lawrence. If we could get anything for Gary he should be on his way out of town. Barham should be kept and Winters and James are placeholders that aren't expensive. Overshown should be traded if possible. Bland should be traded for whatever he might bring. Biggest question is whether to keep Porter or try flipping him right now. Downs should be kept and I would say keep Speed, Revel and Durant. Carson and Steward can be kept as cheap players while the rebuilding is going on. Can move on from Locke and Hooker. Jalen Thompson is on the fence for me.

Trade CD - saves some this year and $29m next year, 8.8m in 2028 and 28m in 2029. Probably pick up a 2nd rounder.

Trade Pickens - no savings next year, should be able to get a 2nd or 3rd rounder at worst.

Trade T. Smith - small savings this year, then the next years savings of $12m, 19m, 7m,11m, and 29m. Pick up 2nd rounder.

Trade Bland for anything - small savings this year, then 13m, 7m, 11m and 28m moving forward.

Trade Clark for 5th or 6th - small savings this year, then save $20m, and 7.4m in '27 and '28.

Trade Gary for 6th or 7th - savings of $5.6m or $15m in '27 and '28.

Trade or cut Ferguson - saves $7m, 4.7m, 6.6m, and 9.7m over the next 4 years.

As of right now, our draft picks for the next couple years are as follows:
-2027 - 1st, 2nd, 4th, 6th and 7th.
-2028 - 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th

I too believe we need to be sellers this year.

I would not trade CD, but if you did, his value is a 1st and 3rd imo. He is so good.

Pickens value you assigned seems about right to me.

I would not trade T Smith, but if I did, it would take a 1st and 3rd minimum.

Bland literally has no trade value. Bad contract with bad play is a no go.

Gary has no trade value. See Bland reasoning above.

Fergy could maybe get a 7th.

The problem as I see it is two fold:

1. JJ is delusional and thinks we are SB contenders and won't be a savvy seller.
2. JJ is bad at recouping value on his players. He usually says they are looking to trade a player after they have stated they will just wave them. So dumb, but our reality.

I don't disagree with the sentiment, but none of this matters if the folks doing the rebuilding are the same two nitwits that have been constructing (and I use that term loosely) the team for three decades now.

Step 1 see if anyone will take Dak for a ham sandwich or literally anything
STEP ONE starts with getting the Jones boys out of personnel. As long as we have those guys in charge of rebuilding, we won’t get anywhere.

I wouldn’t be against trading Dak. But we could get Mahomes in here and it would not massively change our fortunes. Having an 84 year old ego-maniac as our GM is THE biggest problem. He doesn’t know how to rebuild anything regarding personnel and coaching.

Approach dak and tell him to waive his no trade clause, trade him and take the cap hits..Thats the first and only step before we can rebuild.
Not possible. Please see the following:

Short answer: they basically can't — not until 2028 at the earliest, and even then it's ugly. Here's the math, per OverTheCap's current breakdown of his 4-year, $240M deal:

The trap: Dallas already restructured him twice, pushing bonus money into void years (2029–2030). And his 2027 salary ($45M) already became fully guaranteed back in March 2026. His 2027 cap hit if they keep him is $76.0M.

Cut him next offseason (pre-June 1): ~$131.5M dead cap
That's $86.5M in accelerated prorated bonus (2027–2030, including the void years) plus the $45M guaranteed 2027 salary. It would cost nearly double his $76M cap hit to get rid of him. Nobody does this.

Trade him next offseason: ~$86.5M dead cap
Dallas eats all the remaining prorated bonus; the new team takes on the $45M + $55M base salaries. Still worse than keeping him — and he has a full no-trade clause, so he controls whether this even happens.

Post-June 1 cut: $76M in 2027 + $55.5M in 2028
Spreads the pain but saves nothing in 2027 versus just keeping him.

The real window is 2028 — and even that's ~$110M dead vs. an $86M cap hit to keep him, because his 2028 $55M salary converts from injury-guaranteed to fully guaranteed in March 2027.

Bottom line: the restructures turned Dak's deal into a cage. He's a Cowboy through at least 2027 no matter how he plays — which, given the current 90.1 rating at $60M APY, is exactly the problem.

The Jones family have wrecked this team in the short and long term.

Jerry stepping down is the only thing that has a chance of righting the ship. Best option is to sell to Mark Cuban.

I agree with that….

But the only hope with tweedle dee and tweedle dumb is that there maybe is someone that they would bring in that they respect and think could help them. Aikman might be the one that could do it.

You can get 2 first him if you can get 2 for Wentz
I don’t think we can get one 1st for him but if some dysfunctional FO offers 2…..you jump on that immediately! You make that trade right now! I think it’s a pipe dream but there are some weak FOs out there.

What if he retires? What cap hits go into that?

I’d become the biggest homer on the board if they went full rebuild. Give me a groups of hungry 25 year olds with low expectations. Yeah they’ll probably be bad for a couple years but at least they’ll be building towards something.

Right now our plan just seems to be fully reactionary. Wait until the season starts to realize how bad we are and start using future resources to patch holes so Jerry doesn’t have to spend on free agency over the offseason.

If Wince got two first I know we can
