Today was the deadline for reaching an extension with a player on the Franchise Tag. I heard talks broke down a couple weeks ago, but this makes it official. I would've liked for them to reach a new deal and save some cap room in the process. I guess Spencer playing on a contract year is not the worse thing.

I just hope we find a way to sign him next year...he would be a huge loss

Since the Bengals plan on letting Michael Johnson walk after this year as well he might be a nice option for 2014.

Let's see how he does as a hand-in-the-dirt DE before we throw money at him. Good call by the Cowboys. If he is an all-pro, it will cost more to keep him, but overall, I think this is a good gamble.

It is going to be nice to have the cap relief of letting him walk next year. We better start looking at DE in the first next year boys.

Let him walk, slide Crawford in at starting DE, and draft a penetrating DT. All of a sudden our "aging" DLine becomes much younger in 2014.

I really like this if Crawford can show he can be that guy. I have high hopes for him I just need to see it first.

I agree that they should let gramps walk next year but I disagree that they should count on Crawford to fill in for him. Crawford has ability but expecting him to produce at Spencer's level would be unwise. DE should be a priority in next year's draft given the ages of both starting DEs.

What level does Spencer produce at know body knows he hasn't played DE since college. I hope he plays great but then again Crawford may play DE better than him we will have to wait and see.

Definitely a wait-and-see situation. I liked the Crawford pick but I have never considered him a difference maker on the d-line. I just hope he turns into a solid contributor/starter in the future. I still feel, however, that the Cowboys need to add a blue-chip prospect on the d-line next year through the draft.

I wouldn't call it a huge loss never seen him play DE. Great move on Jerry's part not to back up the brinks truck for a player over 30 ;)

It would hurt the team...with his hand down and focused primarily on getting to the qb he's going to be even more disruptive and demand attention which can take some off of dware. I say we find a way to sign him.

I think DE is the most likely position to be drafted in the 1st round by the Cowboys next year.

It's too bad that all of their draft picks combined wouldn't be enough to trade up for Clowney unless they have one of the top 5 overall picks.

Funny how a lot of people want to back up the Brinks truck for Sean Lee who will be 27 in a week and hasn't played a full season yet, but won't pay for a proven pass rusher in Spencer who is only 29.

There isn't any salary cap relief in letting Spencer walk. He will be an UFA. Dallas could've extended him before this season and saved 5m on the cap this year. That 5m could be rolled over to next year and basically cover his cap charge for 2014. Obviously they couldn't work out a deal, but signing him next year after franchising him for 2 seasons would be the worst use of resources.

Very happy to hear that the Cowboys aren't breaking the bank for Spencer. Signing a player to a long-term deal who's turning 30 in January is a recipe for disaster.

I don't want to speak for him, but while it isn't truly "cap relief", it is $10.6M that they aren't spending on him next year...signing him next year only makes sense if it is cost-effective for the team AND if he merits being re-signed...he has to prove that he is still effective as a rush DE

I like Spencer, but for the type of cash he is looking for and his age, letting him go is the best thing for the team. The Garrett era draft picks just need to step up (looking at you Crawford) and yes, we can all look forward to some D-line in the 2014 NFL draft!

Gotta make some tough choices sometimes. I don't think it would have been wise to sign another 30+ year old to a long term deal. Not sure if Crawford or Wilbur is the answer to replace him either, though. Haven't really seen anything from them yet.

Spencer has not shown elite skills at his position. The ceiling is much higher for Lee.
