Concerned about Romo

I already know where this thread is going to go, just because I have an opinion that will differ from a lot of others, so please, spare me the hater stuff in advance, please.

I'm excited we won the game and certainly didn't expect it with the Giants driving at the end. Credit to the defense who are the real reason we won that game, even though the Giants ran right down the field on us. If our offense could actually get in the endzone with all the turnovers they're given, we'd have blown them out.

That being said.. am I the only one here a little concerned that on numerous occasions tonight our OL was giving Romo plenty of time and we couldn't connect with the likes of Miles Austin and Dez Bryant on a more consistent basis? Our TOP was unreal (Likely due to turnovers) and I feel like the offensive performance was horrible. Sure, we didn't run the ball well and Romo got crushed, which very likely impacted his throwing, but I just get the feeling something is up.

I've said it in the past, that I just do not see Romo as a prototypical passer. You have to let him play his own game or he will not be effective. Our team looks like they're playing backyard football. The majority of completions come on plays that have broken down or after Romo has begun to get the shakes while being in the pocket too long.

Fortunately, we have Witten, who Romo almost always goes to in these situations, his "security blanket".

What's the point of the thread? I really don't know, but I was surprised that on several occasions he had plenty of time and nothing came of it. The Giants have a pretty awful secondary and had guys getting injured during the game. Surely that wasn't the reason we weren't more effective. We took unnecessary sacks and we don't seem to test teams down the field nearly enough, either. Sometimes I just wish he would throw it up to Bryant and let him do his thing. It hasn't stopped CJ or any of the other premier WR and I know Bryant is capable of coming down with the ball in the majority of those situations.

So, you want to blame Romo for the several times the wrs didn't get separation and had poor play designs other times? Sure, he missed a few throws but can't blame him if there is no separation, etc. He was hurt and uncomfortable too. He did take those back to back sacks when he shouldn't have, throw the ball away.

I agree about the unnecessary sacks. I wish Romo would get out of the pocket and throw it away if necessary. But I'm not going to criticize him for not finding Austin and Dez when he had a lot of time because in the past he forced some throws that resulted in interceptions. My criticism is that he holds the ball and stays in the pocket too long. There are even situations when he could possibly run for some yardage, but he has become strictly a pocket passer. Those are my only criticisms of Romo, though. Overall, I'm happy with him and I hope his injury is minor because I realize how important he is to our success.

It was a great game plan by the Giants. Tony said that they ran a coverage the hadn't run before.

He threw the ball 49 times w only one pick and that one was totally not his fault. He played the second half far more hurt than he's letting on. Those td throws to Witten were perfect.

It was an interesting night quarterback-wise. You have Tony who played well, but he throws more meaningless completions than any qb in the league. That's not to say that he doesn't throw meaningful ones. He does. It's just that there's a lot of 4 yards on 3rd and 6 type completions in there.

Eli, on the other hand, looks terrible at times, but completes big passes.

At halftime, you look at the stats. And Romo is 25/32. I was really surprised. I thought he had a poor first half while watching it. Eli has four completions and nearly as many yards, with one TD and another that could have been.

Different styles.

There was a little too much dink-and-dunk for my liking. I'm not sure who that was on, but hopefully that is more of an aberration than a trend.

That being said, I'm just glad it looks like he isn't going to be out for half the season like I was fearing at halftime. Fortunately, he was able to shake off a pretty nasty looking hit and provide the team what they needed to take it home.

Good god.

The giants were sitting back giving up nothing big. Everything was a tight fit.

They almost never blitzed and that is why we had no huge plays.

They basically were terrified of giving up the big play.

People need to make up their mind if they want romo to play within the game and be careful with leads or if they want an all out gunslinger.

Or watch the game closer but I guess either way the whining will never end with this fan base.

Here's my advice to everyone. It's week 1 and its cowboys giants. These games always look like this.

Be happy we made one more play than they did for a change.

Don't worry.
This game was a very odd one. Great game plan by the Giants. They took Dz out of it and Romo was out of synch early. When he started to get in synch, he got hurt.
He managed the game other than Williams blown route.
The defensive turnovers saved us and we won.
Be happy!

Their dedication to freezing out Dez Bryant was commendable.

Romo will be fine, overall he had a good game (not great), though he had a few bad throws.

You're right about Romo having a lot of time to throw the ball at certain occasions, but where are you going to throw to when everyone is covered? Tell me this, why couldn't our offensive weapons get separation and get open? Our best WR Dez struggled all night and couldn't get separation. He's not the only one though, for the most part they all struggled. I didn't know the Giants had an all pro secondary squad out there.

Also, that rookie out there is flat out terrible. Learn to catch the ball properly without using your body, also don't screw up your assignment because it'll most likely end up as an interception(which it did). I hope he can pull it together, but I just don't see it happening. I knew Williams understanding of the plays would be an issue. I remember when he ran the wrong route in the pre season, though people wanted to make the bigger deal out of Romo's throw. Now those mistakes are showing up in the regular season, get it together.

I hope our Offense can piece it together, because honestly they're a lot better then they showed. An offense with Romo, Witten, Miles, and Dez should put up a lot of points, especially when the defense gives them an extra 6 drives from turn overs.

Honestly, we just have to run the ball better. The Giants were daring the Cowboys to run the ball successfully to make them not play coverage. But instead, even though Demarco averaged ~4 yards a carry, it wasn't enough carries and it never set anything up. The Giants had a good gameplan.

Their defense certainly aren't world beaters. They took our playmakers completely out of the game and we couldn't do the same in spite of the fact that we have more talent in our secondary? I don't buy it.

The near interception in the first half was probably my biggest disappointment mainly because it was very similar to his pick against Washington in his last regular season game. Other than that, I thought he looked ok. However, it is funny how perceptions change based on whether a defender catches a ball that's thrown right at him.

I don't care if you don't buy it. Try watching the game closer and then go watch some of the previous games.

In the past they have singled up Dez and come after romo, tonight they stayed back and made us drive the ball up the field.

And Austin and Murray has very good games I thought so I don't get what you are saying about them shutting us down.

Romo was injured and stayed in there, played within the game and did enough to win.

You should have made a thread commending romo for his toughness and his leadership.

Making a thread whining about romo on a night where we won a tough game, well I don't buy that.

Romo typically has a tough time against teams that flood the secondary with players, maybe because he doesn't have a rocket arm to zing passes in there.

your concern ought to be directed at the run blocking. The Giants were playing 7 man fronts(or less) and the running game was still pretty anemic. The Cowboys need to be able to force teams to respect the run, bring a safety down or bite on play action.

Then don't, I don't care. This isn't just about this game. I made this thread years ago, here: http://cowboyszone.com/threads/playground-football.193304/#post-3571793

Our offense, as far back as I can remember, under Romo, has almost never run like a well oiled machine and we have the weapons to do it.
