My Last Words on Dallas-Detroit

All week long I have read and heard how Romo, lately, doesn't look like Romo. I listen to the Ticket in Dallas and Bob Sturm has went out of his way to berate Tony for being gun shy and not holding the ball longer. His point, if Romo held the ball a bit longer he could complete those passes he's now throwing away.

But...before I go on, here is Romo being "gun shy." I wonder how many of these hits Romo should take to satisfy Sturm and other critics?

Bob and others have said, "forget the QB rating," he's just not hanging in there.

Well here are some interesting stats from the Detroit-Dallas game.

Stafford "when not pressured" was 33-41 with a TD and a QB rating of 95.1
Romo "when not pressured was" 14-20 with 3 TD and QB rating of 139.6

Stafford "was pressured" on 7 throws in 48 attempts. That's "1 in ever 6.8 attempts."
Romo "was pressured" on 10 of 30 attempts. That's "1 in every 3 attempts."

Proving that QB pressures do matter:
When pressured Stafford was 1-7 for 6 yards
When pressured Romo was 1-10 for 1 yard.

Worse about Detroit's pressure, it nearly all came up the middle. That's the hardest to get away from. Suh and Farley alone hit or pressured Romo 6 times. What amazing is how Tony was not sacked?

Pressure ain't the only problem. Romo is missing open receivers left and right. His vision and timing isn't the best.

I understand it's partly due to him getting demolished once in awhile behind that line, but still.

I hear that a lot..but when you are hit 1 in 3 passes, that makes for missed passes. QB's are all the same. You pressure them, and they will be affected. I am just amazed at how people fail to realize that.

Well, if you are getting pressure up the middle, then you rollout or get rid of the ball quicker. You make adjustments. Garrett and Romo and Callahan didn't. That is on those three.

Romo out to where? Into the arms of the guys coming off the edge?

Do you honestly feel that you are seeing things that those guys dont?

I've been calling for more bootlegs, play action, and even designed scrambles to move Romo away from the pressure. If Garrett hasn't forgotten, Romo is a pretty mobile QB. I can't understand why we don't use Romo's mobility as part of our scheme. Just baffles me that someone can get paid millions of dollars each year and not understand whats going on with our offense.

Alot of his sacks have come from him holding the ball 5-6 seconds instead of throwing it away.

The key to me was Stafford getting pressured on 7 times in 48 passes and Romo 10 in only 30? Ron Leary was the real culprit in this game. This from PFF about Leary's game.

Ronald Leary (-3.3) has been something of a pleasant surprise for the Cowboys at left guard, stabilizing a position that was a concern heading into the season, but he had his worst game against the Lions. That’s not surprising considering they have two of the best pass rushing 4-3 defensive tackles in Nick Fairley and Ndamukong Suh, but his most egregious errors also came against the likes of Willie Young and C.J. Mosley. Overall, he allowed a pair of hits and a pair of hurries in 33 drop-backs. Leary had no answer for Mosley’s swim move with 3:18 to go in the second quarter. I’m not even sure he made contact with the defensive tackle as he made it into the backfield immediately. Leary also struggled in the run game, where he graded negatively more often than positively. He made a crucial mistake with the Cowboys trying to run the clock out (Q4, 3:24) when he missed an assignment onDeAndre Levy to allow a tackle for loss. There were some bright spots, though, such as the block he threw on a screen pass where he was able to seal the aforementioned linebacker, the primary coverage defender on the play, to the inside opening a big lane.

Yeah, thats some terrible blocking.

Funny thing is you're spot on about the assessment on Romo, the pressure is the MAIN REASON for Romo's inaccuracies, though many here will turn a blind eye to it and keep bashing Romo.

It's called cognitive bias

Yeah, that was a hard post to figure. It's a testament to Romo getting the ball out fast, and his elusiveness, that he somehow made it through the game without getting sacked. Much less getting out without broken ribs.

Best post of the season.

I just had a great give and take with The Tickets Bob Sturm..Maybe you would like to see the thread?

It started here:

TheBevoLewis ‏@beevomav2h
@SportsSturm Listened to the show today..as always..Romo led offense scored 17 points in 4th quarter and you say he holds the ball too long?

Bob Sturm ‏@SportsSturm2h
@beevomav When you study the team, you look at each play. Romo's play is over 400 plays, not 2 or 3.

TheBevoLewis ‏@beevomav22m
@SportsSturm.. No doubt that's true..but to put blame on Romo for Ron Leary sucking is a bit much..and most came very quick with no chance..

Bob Sturm ‏@SportsSturm26m
@beevomav it is the NFL. Contact hurts. Are you saying he does keep plays alive compared to 2007-2009 as I was saying?

TheBevoLewis ‏@beevomav9m
@SportsSturm..Against the Broncos he was pressured on 7 of 50 attempts..Lions 10 of 30..That's 1 in 7 vs 1 in 3..there is the difference..

Bob Sturm ‏@SportsSturm22m
@beevomav you are missing the point. OL will often lose a battle on all teams. He used to handle it, now he seldom tries to handle i

TheBevoLewis ‏@beevomav7m
@SportsSturm .. I don't have access to advanced stats..but I bet they show no QB performs when pressured. Dude still scored 17 points in 4th

Bob Sturm ‏@SportsSturm5m
@beevomav that is not the discussion. The discussion was whether he stopped trying to extend plays over the first 8 games as a whole. He has

and so it went..

Right, this was Romo's first bad game all season:rolleyes: He always has tons and tons of pressure doesn't he? Get real, our Oline has been top 10 this season. There is always an excuse for Romo... always. WR's don't run the right routes, coaching is bad, he is hurt, Oline doesn't block for him, and on and on and on.

Bingo.. his timing is off, his passes have been off, he has a very slow 3 step drop, and he is doing nothing more than dinking and dunking and playing conservative. We know what happens when he plays too aggressive, and now we know what happens when he plays too conservative. We need something in between from him.

I make no excuses, I simply state facts. Those are he is the 5th rated passer in the league with the worst defense in the NFL.

He had no bad game against Detroit. He was 14-30 with 3 TD passes and no turnovers, while being pressured on a third of his passes.

The offense, led by Romo, had a 10 point lead with 11 minutes to go in the game. Romo and the offense went on to score 10 more points, and they still lost. Why? Because the defense gave up 24 fourth quarter points.

Now who is making excuses?
