VALLEY RANCH -- After getting mauled by the Lions - surrendering a franchise-worst 623 yards - the Dallas Cowboys defense now ranks 32nd and dead last in the NFL.

"From a pass-defense standpoint, we can't give up that many yards and that many plays," said head coach Jason Garrett.

"We let them score, we let them move the ball," said linebacker Sean Lee, "and at the end of the game, when we have a chance to win, we give up a bunch of big passes again and that's unacceptable."

Unacceptable, yes, but surprising, absolutely not.

Take a look at the numbers below. They show how the Cowboys have been torched through the air these season.

What I will never understand is why they didn't bring more people with the pass rush. It was painfully obvious that rushing four was not working, so you bring five. If five doesn't work, you bring six and so on.

The only saving grace of this defense is they do get turnovers. I just believe they would get more if they brought the house.

Is this what they meant by "bend but dont break" tampa 2?

I hope Kiffen and Marinelli have been huddled together, feverishly hashing out answers to these concerns.

They helped make the Tampa 2. They're not dummies.

Let's hope they can make this defense more successful, despite their talent shortcomings.

I never saw the Tampa 2 get burnt for close to 700 yards in a game before.........................I got no idea what the hell we are running, but it dam sure is not the old Tampa 2 under Dungy.

When I was talking to a friend who was more aware of how the defense worked he was telling me to expect a lot of turnover but it will give up a lot of yards. Now he just laughs and says this isnt what he meant by a "lot" of yards.

Not dummies, but the game has passed the both of them by!!!!! They're making Ryan look genius!!!!

Way, wah, wah. Every other week everyone hates the defense for giving up so many yards. But every week we win we seem to give up just as many and everyone seems to forget & begins the praises again. Jesus Christ there is a lot of short term memory around here. Maybe the offense should have taken advantage of the 4 to's we had & maybe they'd be talking about our record breaking yards. Inabality to take advantage of the opportunities the defense gave them. Sheesh.

Exactly
If the defense plays great this week we should still say they suck because we should use our long-term memory

I had to laugh at your "every other week" analogy. That is so Dallas Cowboys. There is no consistency to this team on either side of the ball. And that is a major fail.

Well really we need to take the defense for what it is & stop pretending it's going to change this year. We can't stop the other team from scoring unless we create a turnover obviously, what we can do though is actually score with those turnovers instead of you know going 3 & out like we seem to love doing.

I think the defense & offense are both to blame. This team rarely plays well on both sides of the ball. Getting turnovers means little to this team because it rarely translates to points.

We're just about as average as average can be.

In defense of Kiffen. This defense does not have the personnel that was expected to carry them this year. No Spencer, Ratliff and a whole lot of injuries. If we had the players, this might be a different defense all together.

Some blame has to be on the FO for "expecting" players like Ratliff to contribute at all.

Hope is not a strategy.

does the fact that Kiffin is [laying with street Free agents starters matter to you?

defense gave the offense 4 turnovers. second team in history to lose with that turnover margin. if it wasn't for a miraculous catch by dez, we'd only have 6 pts off those turnovers.

yes it does which is why i'm focusing my blame for this season squarely on the offense. i'm not going to scapegoat kiffin with all of these injuries like we did ryan last year.

It doesn't really surprise me. Rob Ryan was not a problem. The 3-4 defense was not a problem. It was just last offseason's rearranging of deck chairs on the sinking RMS Jerry Jones.
