If you commit to running the football, it opens up the passing game tremendously

This has been proven time and time again through history. The skillful utilization of the run game is the perfect manager's tool for controlling multiple aspects of the game. Yes. I get the fact that the majority of today's teams are pass first organizations. I get it..

However, 8 of the top 10 rushing leaders are all on teams that utilize the run in a skillful fashion to achieve their weekly goals. These are teams that are successful in utilizing an equitable mix. Need I also say that all 8 are also on track for 1000 yard rushing seasons? The rushing milestone is not normally achieved in your usual pass happy run avoiding offense. I won't make you look up the 8 I am referencing. They are 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 below.

1. Lesean McCoy
2. Marshawn Lynch
3. Jamaal Charles
4. Adrian Peterson
5. Alfred Morris
6. Matt Forte
7. Frank Gore
8. Eddie Lacey
9. Arian Foster (injured.. I know)
10. Deangelo Williams

I have been harping on it all season. We have to become comfortable with utilizing a fair mix of the run to be successful against the solid teams out there in the league. Here's to hoping something encouraging happens on Sunday night in New Orleans.

I agree all I would say is it is not just commitment it is execution and being efficient running the ball. If I had my way Dallas would be a great running team fact is we are not, that does not mean we can't get better at it but there comes a point where spinning your wheels and not putting points on the board matters. Dallas is a very good passing team and when things go stagnate that is what they will lean on. I do want to see us improve our running game no question about that but they have got to do a better job of giving the backs a chance to be effective

Commitment to run the ball not only opens up the passing game, it also opens up the running game. To do that however you must be able to pound the ball, shove it down the other team's throat and wear them down. Running lanes then open up especially late in the game when you need to run the time off.

Seems like no team does that anymore, not much anyway. I miss the days when the league was full of great running backs. Seeing guys like Payton, Dorsett, Campbell, Sanders. OC's just don't seem to have the patience these days, but then, there doesn't seem to be as many good RB's to make it work.

I understand the benefit of a balanced attack and did watch the 90s Cowboys execute it to perfection. However, watch the holes in the line that Emmitt Smith was getting. You could drive a Mack truck through those holes. This year, our RBs are getting stuffed as soon as they get the handoff. I think this o line is better geared to pass blocking instead of run blocking, and the coaches are simply playing to that strength.

The one dimensional approach is going to bite us when it matters most and we will be right back to where we have been for the past 18 years.. Smarting and wondering what might have been.

Appreciate the input from everyone. I can be metallic in my opinions but definitely appreciate the variety of viewpoints offered on the wonderful CZ.

Well, not whoever, just Murray. Murray has one of the highest YPC in the league. The rest of our RBs are sad and pitiful.

We'll put.

At some point in a Super Bowl run you are going to need on your running game.

The simplified reason to run more is to potentially wear down defenders opening up bigger plays in the second half of games and to increase your time of posession so that your less than steller defense does not have to defend as many plays in a game and get worn out themselves. Passing all day is fine if you can execute at a very high level and can maintain a lead by having an above average defense. Dallas is not in that category, so running during close games should benefit them

While I think having an effective rushing game is important, I think it goes beyond that and how the RB's are used. Some of the examples used of teams that aren't necessarily "strong" rushing teams, in particular Detroit and New Orleans, still use their RB's effectively in the short passing game. I know it sounds easier when they have the Sproles or Bush type backs, but they also do well when they utilize J.Bell and P.Thomas. A large part of that is philosophy and play design. Many times those short passes are not just safety valves or after thought dump off's to the RB's, but a genuine part of their game plan. Those short passes to the RB's accomplish many of the same things that rushing plays do, it forces and holds the LB's and Safetys closer to the LOS, which in turn give more space for the WR's and TE's to work.

If the Cowboys want to be a pass happy team, so be it, but use those RB's more efficiently. Force their LB's and safeties to respect our RB's ability as pass catchers. It will open up a few more holes in zone coverage if they have to pick up RB's out of the back field and hopefully get them moving more east and west which would help getting some softer coverage on those vertical and crossing routes for Dez and T-Dub. DeMarco is healthy right now and can be a playmaker for this team, they need to use him as one for cripes sake. It's not about the lack of talent on this team. it's about better utilizing the talent we do have on this team.

Exxactly...

Instead of looking at rushes, we should be looking at touches. If DeMarco touches the ball no less than 15 times on Sunday night, we win. I'd bet money on that. Their LBs cannot compete with Murray out of the backfield. Villa just went on IR thus week too. The check down area is ripe for the picking. 15 Murray touches = win.

“If you’re just thinking, ‘Boy, we better get to 15 runs, 20 runs, just to make sure that we appease everybody, that’s just silly,” Romo said.

It's about scoring points.

Any way any how.

You can't run it better than Washington did tonight and griffin ended up on his back at critical times tonight.

Tony is right, of course, but watching AP tonight reminds me of how inspirational MB3's runs could be, and how that smash-mouth kind of football can elevate an entire team.

Well, I admit that I only posted Tony's quote because I remembered Blue making an explicit point about fifteen carries earlier. :)
