My plan to win with Orton

Here's my game plan for winning with Orton. Admittedly, I'm not an expert, but this is what makes sense to me:

1. Run the ball. We've got a good O-line this year and a very good running back. Learned your lesson from the Packer game? Good. Then RUN it! We need to now more than ever since Orton lacks Romo's ability to escape and extend the play. The Eagles will likely game plan to stop the run and make us win via the air. Run anyway. We have a good enough line and RB that we could get running yards anyway. Plus, that sets up ...
2. Play action. Use it and use it wisely. The Eagles are a team that over-pursues. They'll key in on Murray and we hit an open Witten, Dez, Beasley, whoever.
3. Control the clock. Our D sucks. It might be passable if it's kept rested. Long, sustained drives let'em rest and keep the ball out of the hands of the opposing offense.
4. Protect Orton. The first 3 above will do much to do that. If we get into the disastrous pass, pass, pass mode, we invite Orton to get clobbered.
5. Take our shots down the field. If we do the first 4, the field will open up and we CAN pass some.
6. Use plays that Orton has proven in practice to excel at. If there's some great play that Romo has pulled off great, but Orton sucks at it, throw it in the trash. Use what Orton does well, not what Tony does well.
7. We need some help from special teams. It looks like we signed the right guy in return man, Micheal Spurlock. Give him some lanes. Maybe he can break another one.
8. Create takeaways. The one thing this D excelled at, at least earlier in the season, was takeaways. We need them to find a way to do that again. If we succeed in the plan to keep the D off the field too much, they'll be more rested and have a better chance at those takeaways.
9. Give Murray some breaks by letting Tanner, Randle, and maybe even Cluuts do a little of the running.

Philly will put up 45-plus points. Orton can't do that. Romo can.

This will be brutal.

Although I agree with erod

We have to try.

However we can, we got to run that clock. On offense just run that clock down.....on defense.....keep everything in front of us,,,run the clock down on defense too......hope we catch a Few breaks in the redzone....but DONT give up the big play.

Play tight. Take some shots. DEZ, DEZ Murray Murray, screens, play action, trick plays, run the clock down.

Keep it close going into the 4th, and hope for a break, or bounce or Play.

Orton will have to convert alot of 3 rd and 5s or longer when they stuff our running game. Good luck with that.

I ain't scared to roll with Kyle Big Game.

Really. Some of these guys act like Stephen McGee is QBing Sunday night. Just one other thing here...if Dallas wins, and it certainly doesnt look great, but if they do win...there is no saying things like....Demarco Murray won that game for us, or Special teams is what won the game, or we would've lost if not for the pick 6 Foles served up....none of that talk because the statement being made is that ......No way can Dallas win with Kyle Orton at QB.

Yeah, I think we need to establish the passing game on the first series, then run as they start leaning backwards a bit.

I think the Eagles will be stacking it up to stop the run right from the beginning.

Forgot to include screens. I hope Orton is good at them. I agree this game is a long shot. After the results of the last few seasons, I would not be at all surprised by a royal drubbing by the Eagles, resulting in another 8 and 8, no playoffs end. However, they've got to take their shot, and to do that you need a good game plan.

Dude has not taken a snap in over 2 seasons and he is going to be straight up balling?

We are going to have to score 40+ to win and I just dont see some guy that has been sitting on the bench for 2 years coming in and having that type of a game in week 17.

I can see ur frustration waning Erod. No way Philly puts up more than 40. I feel ya tho. This College, High School bull**** gimmicky offenses are making me sick and with the ****** rules in place allowing them to work is grotesque. In spite of this we shut his **** down once with our pissy line I think we slow them down again.

My plan. PRAY. Sweet baby Jesus, all I. Want for Christmas is to Orton to Lead the Cowboys to Victory on Sunday. Have him be twice the QB than Romo, and not just in jersey number. Amen

Jimmy Johnson won with his third string QB named Jason Garrett. If Garrett wants to keep his job he needs to get Orton ready to play and give us a win. Earlier in the year we were reading articles about Orton being the best backup in the league and now it's time to show it.

7&8 are the keys to me. We can't win without out of the ordinary performances by our special teams and especially our defense. They need to produce a touchdown or otherwise we are unlikely to win a points vs points shootout.

I don't think Philly will put up a 40 burger on us. They spanked the Bears because of miscues and mistakes on the part of Chicago. It we eliminate those types of mistakes, I think we can keep the game close.

But I don't have confidence that our backup QB can win this game for us. We're just lacking in too many other areas ... including D.

Philly pass defense is as worse as ours. If Orton can't take advantage of a weak defense and put up points, we are paying the wrong guy to be Romo's backup

Looking solely on the offensive side of the ball, I think numbers 1 & 2 on that list are the most important keys to victory. If we get the running game going the playaction pass will work. It worked great in the first half versus the Packers but as usual Garrett/Romo/Callahan went away from what was working. The Cowboys were picking up huge chunks of yards off the playaction pass and it was all because of the chunks of yards the running game was picking up.

Also if I'm the Cowboys I'd dial up a few screen plays early. I think the Eagles will try to blitz Orton early to rattle him and I think we should be able to burn them for a few big plays early if we catch them blitzing. Just something to think about.
