He was asked about if his offense is going to be a fast paced, high flying offense (I'm paraphrasing). He responded by saying that to win football games you have to first be a tough, disciplined football team. He said it all comes down to being able to run the ball late in the game and that takes a tough, disciplined football team. There's ton's of casual football fans here that don't agree with this. But it's football 101.

It's not this that ppl disagree with.
It's your assertion that the NFL is a running league instead of a passing league. If it is "Football 101" like you say it is, then why are coaches electing to pass so much? Ya know, the guys that do it for a living and study the game.

Everybody knows that you need to be able to run the ball with the lead late in the game. Strong didnt say anything groundbreaking here. Sounds like a standard response, at least from what youve described.

Running the ball effectively is great, but the teams that can pass effectively are the ones that win in today's NFL. It's a passing league. The money paid to quarterbacks, receivers, and defensive backs proves it. That doesn't mean running the ball isn't important to winning as well.

I'd settle for running the ball more than 7 times in the second half with a 23 point lead.

I liked watching FSU keep running the draws out of their shotgun very late in the 4thQ last night. Busted some nice gain off and kept a good defense off-balance. Hope Jason was watching and not drawing more pass plays in his basement.

His offense wasn't fast paced necessarily at Louisville. They did alot of traditional type offensive stuff with Teddy.

I hate to break it to all those UT fans, but Charlie was FAR from the Longhorns first option as Head Coach..lol.

I don't see him being some huge get, hes not any better than many of the coaches already in the Big 12. I think he's a good coach but he's not gonna turn them into some complete powerhouse like Texas SHOULD be. Competing for National Titles year in and out like the Alabama's and FSU's of the world.

One of the things I've always disliked about the offense since Garrett became HC was the seeming inability to realize that running the ball can and will benefit you later on even if it doesn't pay off early.

Why not? First, I think Texas fans know he wasn't the first option. That shouldn't matter. Is he the right option is more relevant. Second, this depends on who he hires around him. He's a good recruiter. A tough physical coach that holds his players accountable. Something Texas has desperately missed for the past few years if not decade. FSU's only been competing for exactly 1 year and that's this year. The other years they were pretenders and getting beat by better competition. What happened at Alabama is not the norm.

Doesn't matter if he was the first choice...what matters if he is the right choice. He did a fine job at his previous employer so I'm for seeing what he can do.

Football 101 is winning anyway possible...

I'd take Charlie Strong right now for the Cowboys over Garrett. At least he's proven he has some football smarts.

Yeah FSU will continue to be in the title hunt every season now with the Jimbo Fisher transition. Just watch

Strongs a good coach but Texas should be competing for National Championships every season and I do not believe they will still. The fact that UT has let A&M and Baylor pass them up is a disgrace in it self.

Take a look at the teams Louisville played. He's in over his head and was far from choice one.

Well he's the one they hired & he's an impressive guy from all I've seen. And I understand he's a good recruiter.

Bama fan here so I have no dog in this fight but I will say that Strong will do a good job at Texas when its all said and done.

Strong will get the best players and they will play hard for the guy. He was one of the main pieces as to why Florida was so dominate during their run a couple years back and his departure really hurt the Gators since.

Add the fact what he did at Louisville, (despite weak competition) he still got great players to follow him to Louisville and I see no difference at UT.

Exactly who did Urban Meyer beat at Utah before he went to Florida and win 2 national titles? Heck, who did Strong beat in the Sugar bowl last year?

A uninterested and underwhelming Florida team.
Urban Meyer is great offensive mind who got Tebow. One of the very best college players ever.
Strong could be good. I don't think he will.

There aren't any teams that are weak physically and mentally that are winning. I'm not saying you have to run the ball on every down or even the majority. You have to have a balance. Those teams that don't have the balance, rarely win consistently. Those teams that aren't tough mentally and physically, don't win at all.

Seattle and SF both run it more then they pass 55-45%. In the 4th quarter that run number gets higher. Dallas passes it 65% runs it 35% and in the 4th quarter that pass number increases sometimes to 85%.

The Power in the NFC is running the football and playing solid defense.
