Walls: Cowboys Need To Shore Up Front Seven

IRVING, Texas – The Cowboys’ all-time single-season leader in interceptions doesn’t point the finger at the Dallas secondary for finishing last in the league in total defense.

Former Cowboys cornerback Everson Walls, who set a team record with 11 interceptions his rookie season in 1981 and compiled 44 picks during his time with the Cowboys from 1981-89, said on NFL Network that the problem with the defense lies with the front seven.
“I lived by pressure,” Walls said. “(Ed) ‘Too Tall’ Jones, Harvey Martin, Randy White, I had plenty of pressure up there. They made me so upset sometimes, they took away my interceptions because they got there so fast…That’s the luxury that I lived with. The Cowboys need to shore up not just their front four, but their front seven.”

“If you’re going to be good in the secondary, you have to be good on the defensive line, and that’s just all there is to it,” Walls said.

Well Randy White and Harvey Martin in a QB face tended to make the QB get rid of it a bit faster than they wanted to which leads to poor passes and ints.

I saw that as well. It's just interesting because everyone expects a secondary player to point the finger at secondary but he says explicitly that we need to shore up the front seven. Yes we all knew that but it's nice to be vindicated by a professional.

That was the first thing I thought, too. In a normal offseason, there's always the interplay between good secondary/good pressure, but in an offseason where you lose three scheduled starters from the season before, and the fourth is possibly out of the league due to injury, there's really not much of a debate.

And, for the record, on defense you need both secondary and linemen. You need everybody, or else the position you don't have gets exploited and the whole unit is compromised. It's not the same thing as on offense where you can play away from a weakness because you're the one designing where the ball is going on the play.

Have there really been past conversations with anybody here who doesn't understand that pressure is important on defense? I mean, some pretty stupid things get debated from time to time, but that's one of those elementary principles I can't see anybody disputing. Or are you talking about the discussions about whether we're weaker up front or on the backend in general? Because those I'm definitely familiar with.
