From left, Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Jason Garrett, Owner Jerry Jones and his son Executive Vice President/COO Stephen Jones talk in the Dallas Cowboys "War Room" on the first day of the NFL Draft at Cowboys Training Facility at Valley Ranch in Irving, Texas on Thursday, May 8, 2014.

Stephen Jones never snatched a card with Johnny Manziel’s name on it out of his father’s hands in the Dallas Cowboys draft room.

In a recent book titled “Manziel Mania,” author Jim Dent writes that Jerry Jones wanted Manziel so badly when the Cowboys were on the clock in the first round that he scribbled Manziel’s name on a card and was ready to take the Heisman Trophy winning quarterback from Texas A&M.

That didn’t happen, Jerry said Tuesday on his weekly radio show on 105.3 The Fan (KRLD-FM).

“We’re well aware that there are a lot of people looking at us in that room,” Jerry said. “You’d think we could act a little more organized than that.”

Jerry said if anybody could talk him out of taking a player it would be Stephen, the team’s chief operating officer.

“Figuratively speaking it got close to that,” Jerry said. “It certainly was a big debate going on at no place else other than my mind.

Jerry Jones wanted to pick Johnny Manziel, had draft card 'snatched'

By James Brady15 hours ago

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has said that the team was "that close" to pulling the trigger on quarterback Johnny Manziel with the 16th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Now we know just how close.

In a new book, author Jim Dent reveals that Jones had a draft card with Manziel's name on it and was set to turn it in, when Stephen Jones, his son and vice president of the team, "snatched" the card from him, according to Sean Lester of the Dallas News.

Dent, who has previously written about Jones in another book, said that he could imagine Jones' "hands were shaking when the Cowboys went on the clock with Manziel still on the board," and that he could "envision Jones scribbling the name of Johnny Manziel on the draft card."

"All of these things happened," Dent writes, and Stephen Jones "snatched the Manziel card straight out of his dad's hand."

There was plenty of talk about Manziel to the Cowboys prior to the draft. Some even suggested that Dallas would trade up to bring Manziel on board. But the Cowboys went with offensive lineman Zack Martin instead, which was probably a good choice for all involved.

This just screams of the media making a story out of nothing. The media knows that if they write something even remotely controversial about Dallas they will get the attention and spotlight they crave.

And for once, Jerry talked himself back down from the edge...and he didn't need someone to snatch any card.

There you go.

No, you left out it all happened in his head and he's happy with the pick they made. All that is Jerry speak for I thought about it and we thought about it and discussed it. I'm telling everyone so I can get print and attention but we had already decided we weren't taking the player mostly because he would sit behind Romo for at least three years.

There was no card snatching. So this is about what one would expect most teams to have done with JF and it's a non-story except in the minds of the media and those who wish it to be one.

Wonder how long it will take the media to ask Mr. Dent to substantiate the claim he made in his book? A day? A week? Long enough for the new Rowdy to grow stubble on his puggy cheeks? Never?

Jerry said:
“I want you to know that almost as I was handing in the card, it was that close to putting that Manziel card in. It was that close,” Jones told the NFL Network.

Manziel is this years Tebow.

You can not turn on a NFL show on ESPN without them constantly talking about Manziel like he has already won the starting job and is on pace for MVP.

Maybe I am overlooking something obvious, but unless I am mistaken there is not even any reason for Jerry to have a draft card in his hand no matter who they are picking. Jerry, Stephen, Jason etc. are all in the War Room when the draft is taking place, not in Radio City. They call in their pick to their rep at Radio City, and then HE fills in the card out then takes it up and submits it. So the thought of Stephen snatching the draft card out of Jerry's hand doesn't even make sense on any level.

I stand by my comments. Jerry is a blithering idiot more than a little and less than always. Let's say he sounds like a blithering idiot at times.

Exactly. They decide who they want to take. They call the guy at Radio City Music Hall that reps the cowboys. That guy writes the card down and it is taken to Goodell.

Sounds to me that all the talk of jerry running the draft Room may not be the case. If Jerry was running it alone and wanted Johnny football he would be on the team right now and yet he is not, instead we took Martin. BP himself has said Jerry listens and expects those people to be able to give legit reasons why we should take one player over another. If this was all about money as some love to claim Jerry is only interested in then Dallas would have taken Johnny Football and raked in the money off the Jersey sales and main stream media attention he is getting.

Just a thought. What if this guy actually means the magnet that the guys in the room put on their own board.

Did anybody else see Johnny Manzel play last night? He is a rookie in his 2nd pre-season game...so I will give him a little more time. But a couple of things that will NEVER change about him....he looks awfully small out there. His speed is hardly noticeable at THIS level...and he has never really been a pocket passer. So I think too often people point to the size of Drew Brees and Russel Wilson as proof this kid is not to small..but again...BOTH are pocket passers. People seriously underestimate the poise Russell Wilson shows IN THE POCKET! Johnny looked like a fish out of water against a very average Commander team. Can't imagine what Baltimore, Cincy and Pitt will do to him. If you recall RG3 rookie year...the Commanders played the AFC North..go revisit what those teams did to the Commanders...while RG3 was tearing the rest of the wussies in the NFL apart. And if that does not do it for you...go back to the Super Bowl when the Ravens beat the 49ers..and listen to the crying, whining and complaining Kappernick was doing before the lights went out. The AFC is not very welcoming to scrambling QBs!
