Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones seemed at peace with his decision to pass on Johnny Manziel in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft when he acknowledged to NFL Media's Rich Eisen and Michael Irvin in July that he "took the right pick" in offensive lineman Zack Martin.

That couldn't be further from the truth.

In a recent eye-opening, in-depth profile by ESPN.com's Don Van Natta Jr., Jones emphasized his ongoing regrets about seeing Manziel in another uniform.

During the draft, Jones argued with his son, executive vice president Stephen Jones, that Manziel would have guaranteed the Cowboys' relevance for the next decade.

"I'm still so damn mad at Stephen," Jones exclaimed. "... I get madder, every day, about missin' (Manziel)."

When the Cowboys were on the clock, Jones told his war room that drafting any player other than Manziel would have been a "ticket to parity, more 8-8 seasons."

As the days past by on this story it is apparent that not much exciting is happening in the NFL this year. You're probably going to see New England, Denver and Pittsburgh go to the playoffs. Nobody cares about Indianapolis (and I don't think they make the playoffs). In the NFC it will probably be Seattle, Green Bay and New Orleans making the playoffs and ruling the NFC.

Just more ho-hum, been there...done that.

So, let's write a story about Jerry. And since we were dying to have the Cowboys draft Johnny Football and he didn't...let's play up the Jerry is livid at his son Stephen angle.

ESPN already got rightfully chastised for discussing Michael Sam's showering habits and since Sam was cut by the Rams...not much to talk about. So, let's rely on Jerry and the good ole Cowboys and go that well once again to liven up some NFL talk.

Put the two bolded items together.

What does it tell you?

Jones thinks relevance is all important. But then suggests Manziel would prevent 8-8 Hell.

This not not like ordering a pizza. You don't just toss the ingredients on cheese covered dough, do a commercial with a geriatric break dancing and suddenly you're golden.

As Strother Martin once said portraying Percy Garris in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid..."Morons. I've got morons on my team."

OR just maybe Tony is doing as well as advertised and JF would have been a solid pick. Time will tell.

It tells me what I have said for years...

If you really want to make Jerry to resign his GM position...make the Cowboys irrelevant.

So, it goes beyond purchasing products...it goes into watching games. One of the very things cited in the article was Jerry pointing to the TV ratings the Cowboys draw.

If you're a Jerry Jones hater and still watching games, still clicking on Web sites about the Cowboys, etc...you're just enabling him to continue as the General Manager of this team.

by "relevance" Jerry means season-ticket/ticket sales.

If manziel is a hit, he wants it on the record that he wanted him.

By that logic if Manziel is a bust...he's the guy that wanted him and it was good they didn't listen to him.

I honestly don't think Jerry cares one iota about covering for himself.

If he's a bust, then he's just one of a dozen mistakes Jerry has made the last few years. I honestly think he feels no shame from them anymore. But if he's a big hit, he wants to make sure he's hitched to that train. Heck he might try to bring him down here in a couple of years. Jerry's love for Manziel is genuine and after reading that article it's easy to see what they have in common. I think it has more to do with that than any media boredom.

LOL......

That's great. I love the parity on this post.

The only question I have is, Who's Percey? Is it Jerry or is it Stephen?

Jerry and Stephen are Butch and Sundance, who Percy Garris was speaking about.
