The Cowboys Would've Taken Williams Over Murray In 2011

Here’s what I know about Ryan Williams and Dallas:

I’m not sure how much of this is public knowledge so bear with me, but the Dallas Cowboys have coveted Ryan Williams for some time. In 2011, the Cowboys were prepared to select Ryan Williams in the second round at pick number 40. At the time, they saw an incredible football player that had the makings of a complete back in the NFL. And It should be no surprise that the Cowboys fell in love with a Virginia Tech back. In 2004, the Cowboys passed on Steven Jackson in the first round because they thought there was “comparable backs” in the second round. One of those comparable backs who they liked was Kevin Jones from VT. Jones failed to make it back to them in the second round and the team was force to “settle” for Julius Jones. You will notice a trend in a moment.

Back to Ryan Williams. Dallas had their sights locked into Ryan Williams at number 40 and were ready to make the call to Williams informing him that the team was going to select him. Instead, the Arizona Cardinals swiped him out of their grasps just two picks prior. Dallas was so confident that they were going to leave the draft with either Mark Ingram (after making multiple calls to move up to select him) or Ryan Williams. Heart-broken, Dallas went ahead and drafted an injured Bruce Carter in the second round and “settled” again for their running back. This time, it was in the third round for a player named DeMarco Murray out of Oklahoma. Funny how things work out.

A lot of discussion about Williams on sports radio out here in the desert. According to the Cards, he was not cut due to injury, but because he was outperformed by the other backs on the roster

"I think you always want to try to always give the player the benefit of the doubt and try to see the process through," Cardinals GM Steve Keim told Doug and Wolf on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM Tuesday. "He was bit early with the injury bug, then he came back and he was healthy.

"Quite frankly, Bruce and his staff gave him several opportunities last season, and quite frankly, he was outperformed by some of the younger backs on our roster."

I wanted Kevin Jones in the first that draft until Steven Jackson slid down to our pick and I was ANGRY (yelling at the tv) we let Jackson go by and knew K Jones would not make it til we picked again. I still had hope we'd trade up in the 2nd to get Jones and it never happened.

Yeah, he certainly use to have the ability but after his injuries and just not being active I have some doubts. I'm definitely curious now that the Cowboys have paid him a bonus.

I think he's good insurance for DeMarco..

I love Murray and hope he stays.

But the reality is we probably can't afford him now and he will move on.

I know there are those who sentimentally believe some how he will stay.

I don't think so.

We have to pay Dez and will need to sign some of our other FAs and play Williams and our other backs must step up to keep from losing ground to Philly and Seattle.

So..

that means a cheaper back and our current backs must get their chance now.

And it is a good lesson in doing your due diligence for players likely down the line as well as don't get zeroed in on a player as the one you get may be better than the one you wanted.

This stuff happens every year. I'm sure terrence williams wasn't the top wr on their list that year or Romo for that matter. Also Bet patriots liked another QB over brady Before they took him in the 6th.

Doesn't matter who they liked best 4 years ago in a draft, it's about the now.

Dallas is keeping Williams well paid and available and obviously it's mutual, since he's had offers from other teams and has turned them down to remain a Cowboy. They're developing him aplenty. Next year, I'm fairly confident he'll come in handy, especially if his services are required while a rookie RB is being developed.

New England was about to draft Demarco Murray but Dallas took him a few picks before they could and they ended up drafting Stevan Ridley instead. Demarco even said he thought he was about to go to New England because they had been calling him.
