In Vikings-Peterson stare down, retirement card could come into play

Ben Dogra is nothing but persistent.

The powerful agent, never shy about playing the role of antagonist if he deems it required, has been plenty content to take a heel turn in the ongoing saga of Adrian Peterson vs. the Minnesota Vikings. It would come as no surprise if he continues to push whatever leverage the beleaguered star running back has.

If that means continuing to make life uncomfortable for his past, current, and I suppose, future employer, then so be it. Never underestimate Dogra's will, especially in the current climate. This showdown with the Vikings comes in the wake of Dogra leaving his former mega-agency, CAA, under dueling allegations and joining another mega-agency, Relativity, at a time when the NFLPA is investigating Dogra for possible impropriety, and on the heels of top clients J.J. Watt and Trent Williams making changes in their representation.

So if he has to go to war for Peterson, and extend this off-field skirmish through the summer, well, that's part of the gig sometimes.

When a player retires, a team can still trade their rights to that player, correct?

Why do I feel like I'm in that scene from The Core, where everyone's pacemakers stopped and they all fell dead at the same moment?

That is NOT the title of that article, which is In Vikings-Peterson stare down, retirement card could come into play.

Canfora uses the word "could." He never reports Peterson or his agent saying the word "retirement."

sigh.

I'm at work at that site is blocked, but Adrian Peterson can absolutely force their hand. I wouldn't retire though. I would hold out through 10 games, and then retire so they can't use that money for anything.

Adrian Peterson's agent texted Jason Cole a couple days ago and said "Adrian is strong, very strong...like Revis"

In my mind that hinted at a hold out.

People think Minnesota has all the leverage, but Peterson has quite a bit himself. He can hold their salary cap hostage over the next three years, he can play 6 games a year (assuming the rules haven't changed) and still accrue time.

I hate to indulge any of the Peterson talk, but isn't his act wearing thin on anyone who actually still wants him?

He is acting like a petulant child. He has no leverage. None. And if this is true, he is now he is pulling the Favre-ish retirement card?

If it is not about money, he wants what, "love" from the front office who he feels turned their back on him when in essence he was the one who put himself in that position to begin with?

I really hope this is just his insane agent talking. And even if so, he could always fire him. I know I would. He is not casting himself in a good light right now, no matter who he ends up playing with.

He does that and he basically damages any and all credibility he has to get a guaranteed contract from anyone.

Keyshawn Johnson is the classic case of what pouting does for a player's career.

To me it just seems like the agent wants to find a way to get paid.
