Adrian Peterson threatening retirement

I hate to indulge any of the Peterson talk, but isn't his act wearing thin on anyone who actually still wants him?

He is acting like a petulant child. He has no leverage. None. And if this is true, he is now he is pulling the Favre-ish retirement card?

If it is not about money, he wants what, "love" from the front office who he feels turned their back on him when in essence he was the one who put himself in that position to begin with?

I really hope this is just his insane agent talking. And even if so, he could always fire him. I know I would. He is not casting himself in a good light right now, no matter who he ends up playing with.

You are dead of balls accurate.

Except. He wants what he wants. OUT!

The threat of retirement is desperate and won't work. Vining will ok, retire. Enjoy!

Oakland cut McClain. Baltimore signed him off the street and traded him after he quit.

And I hate you for even mentioning this because, of course, that is the next thing the AP/AD pod people will latch onto.
Lol @ pod people.

Retirement is actually premature and doesn't actually give the greatest amount of leverage.

Retiring gives the Vikings all their money back for the year.

Rather than retire, what you want to do is stay active, but hold out until week 11 (12).

I call this the Logan Mankins.

This forces the Vikings to carry a roster spot for him and carry his salary.

He could also start the first 6 games of the season and then have a midseason holdout. By doing this you still earn a percentage of your money without really fully helping the team. You also accrue a season.

Both of these strategies have validity, and you'd have to perhaps look at the schedule to see what would make more sense.

Do you want to risk injury before the trade deadline?
Do you want to be in shape before the trade deadline?
Do you want to show your resolve before the trade deadline?

The thing that gets me is that Vikings fans and writers are so petulant and ridiculous. They think AP has no leverage at all... which is ridiculous. They also think this is just about what happened with his suspension, completely ignoring that he called Jerry Jones last off season and told him he wanted to be a Cowboy...

I think he's 30 and wants to be a cowboy before age forces him out, it was probably his dream. Not the most believable hill for a guy to stand on to force a trade when push comes to shove and they start messing with his money

Please don't compare him and Johnson. Peterson is a hall of fame running back who is on the last contract of his career. He is well known in the league and basically any team would want him.

If he can force the Vikings to make a trade, he can also control to which team he goes. If he is willing to push the envelope, he can play in Dallas.

Agreed. Comparing him to Keyshawn is dumb.

The front office has been trying to at least somewhat balance the budget between offense and defense.
It's a big issue at VR.

Mike Zimmer is taking a hard stance and saying that Peterson can either play for the Vikings or he won't play anywhere.

Risky move in my opinion. What's to stop Peterson from suiting up and fumbling everytime they hand him the ball. He is a grown up so I doubt he would do this but he doesn't seem like the type to provoke either. The Vikings can't win here.

Zimmer did leave room for the possibility that Peterson will want a fresh start elsewhere, and he said if that’s the case, the Vikings would be open to it.

“If he was just dead set against it and he wasn’t gonna be happy where he’s at, then we’d discuss maybe something else
, but I just don’t see that happening. I think he’s happy with the progress of where the organization is going, I think he’s happy with the way Teddy [Bridgewater] is playing and the things we’re trying to do to improve this football team and hopefully he’s excited to be part of it,” Zimmer said.

I now know what Zimmer's word is worth.

I interpret that is the Vike would be open to trading him, so he could get a fresh start. They just weren't going to give him away for nothing in return. Zimmer said they would discuss the idea and I am sure he and Vikes have discussed it, which means he has kept his word.

They just can't make a trade happen. It takes a trade partner who is willing give up a high draft pick and carry Peterson's huge salary.

I was referring to Zimmers rant at his press conference today where he was not at all welcoming to the idea of trading Peterson. I think once the draft ended the Vikings feel the possibility to trade him ended.
Zimmer was very clear. Peterson plays for the Vikings or he plays for nobody.

Sounds like you're willing to tell yourself just about anything.

Really? What have they asked for in this 'trade' that they've tried so hard but have been able to make happen?

And he was supposedly clear when he said if Peterson wanted out, they'd help make that happen. His word is clearly worthless.

So saying we are willing to discuss things is supposed to autocratically mean the Vikes should just give into every Peterson demand. Zimmer never said he would let him walk nor did he promise Peterson they would accept just any trade deal. He said they would discuss things. Saying his is going back on his word is utter nonsense.

What's 'utter nonsense' is trying to believe that he honored any part of his prior statements, because he didn't. Not a word of it. And he visited Peterson personally, made his 'pitch' and he failed. And now, rather than honor any words he spoke previously, he's fallen in line with the rhetoric from his masters. You can try to make excuses for him all day if you want. The man has been proven to be a liar.

Statement to me from Adrian Peterson: "The reason I'm not attending OTAs has nothing to do with wanting to be traded. It's about securing my future with the Vikings. It's business, not personal and I understand that firsthand. Go Vikings."

What did he lie about? What exact words are you viewing that show a lie? He never promised a trade and he certainly didn't promise to cut him. Stop making stuff up.

To which Zimmer and the Vikings did nothing other than to state that they would not in fact do "something else" to honor what are clearly the players' wishes to not play in Minnesota.

And since then, Zimmer's line has changed to whatever the company told him to say.

The only person 'making stuff up' here is you trying to make up excuses for Zimmer failing to honor his prior words.

Peterson doesn't want a fresh start elsewhere according to his statement. It is all about wanting more guaranteed money. Zimmer is not a liar, but somehow that makes you seem better if you make him out to be the bad guy.

That statement certainly gives things a different spin, don't they?

Zimmer is not a liar, but somehow that makes you seem better if you make him out to be the bad guy.

He made a statement in February and then completely changed his tune. So he either lied then, or he's lying now. I don't care if he coached here or not.
