Adrian Peterson threatening retirement

No, the work out bonus is gone. As far as fines go, when he actually skips organized team activities, I think the team eventually caves, whether it's dropping the fines or dropping the fines plus partially guarantying his salary for next year, the Vikings realize they are better with Peterson and will cave to some extent.

That is how it usually works.

If it doesn't go that way, I could see Peterson accumulating a few 100k in fines before reporting. Enough to cause a stink and make a point.

He would lose millions if he gets his way and leaves MINN so a few 100k is nothing

He will lose millions if he doesn't stay in Minnesota and I doubt any team will guarantee the $12 million he will make this year with the Vikes. He wants guaranteed money and lots of it. That makes it unlikely he will end up in Dallas or any other place besides Minnesota.

I respectfully disagree. I think Dallas would guarantee that $12.5 million, in the form of a bonus based on a 3-year deal. I've mentioned that I believe the Cowboys would jump at a 3-year deal for $25 million with half of that guaranteed.

And all other factors considered, I think Peterson would jump at it too.

IMO, if the Vikings released Peterson, which isn't happening, his demands would sky rocket.

The trouble is the guy has proven to be a schmuck.

Say you give him $12 mil guaranteed this season in order to offset the salary he's losing at Minnesota, the result is no guaranteed money next season so he plays the same game, "Well I think I'm not seeing the Cowboys commitment to me because they aren't willing to guarantee my salary". The result is some thing nasty where he doesn't play for Dallas in '16 and the Cowboys have to swallow a large amount of dead cap in '16 with a number of free agents already on the table.

Then what do you do after the first year when Peterson has received the $12.5 million bonus, has roughly 2 years and $12.5 left of the contract, and starts up with another "I'm not being paid enough " temper tantrum like the one is is having now?

I don't expect that would happen.

DAL would've guaranteed him 12m but only accounted for 6m of it on the salary cap

They would only owe him 4m in 2016 and the dead money hit would make it very stupid to cut him. Peterson will know it is at least a 2 year deal for 16m.

Year 3 after a SB win or two will be a victory lap.

3 yr/24m............12m guaranteed........9m signing bonus

..........Salary..........Cap Hit.........Dead Money After

2015.....3m.............6m...................6m
2016.....4m.............7m...................3m
2017.....8m.............11m.................0m

I'm failing to see how that is a better deal than he currently has with the Vikings. While his base salary is not fully guaranteed at this point all he has to do is make it in the roster for game #1. If he does that and in reality it should be very easy to do he earns that whole salary for the season which is slightly more than the $12 million you have lined up for him. He would also get no more guaranteed money and much less in possible base salaries under your format. A drop in base salary from $15 million to $4 million in 2016 is not something most players would agree to doing.

Peterson wants his current high base salary of 2015 and some guaranteed money thrown in for 2016.

It is not better at all. But it is with a team he wants to play for.

If MINN wants to keep him then Peterson wants to maximize his guaranteed money for the next couple years.

But his first choice is to make a bit less and play for DAL. And the guaranteed money is still the same.

I've seen nothing from Peterson that indicates he is willing to take less money. He is all about getting paid and getting large guarantees.

I don't expect that would happen.

Why would Peterson want that when his current deal pays him $28 million over the next 2 years? I know that the $28 million is not guaranteed, but he either gets the $28 million or he gets cut and become a UFA (which is really what he wants all along).

Realistically speaking and using your scenario, his choice is between getting $13 million this year then being a UFA, or $16 million over the next 2 years (and still with 1 year left on his deal). Yeah, I gotta think he takes option A.

When Peterson says he wants "guaranteed money" he means something in the $30's, not $12 million. Otherwise the smart move is to just take this year's $13 then either be a UFA or take next year's $15.

That's not the real choice imo.

MINN choose not to guarantee any more money to Peterson, so their commitment is less than strong. MINN can cut him at any time instead of paying him 12.75m, so the 15m next year is probably off the table.

So it's not a choice of 28m vs 16m, it is a guaranteed 12m with a probable 16m vs an offer from another team that Peterson didn't call and tell them he wants to play there.

I've seen nothing from Peterson that indicates he is willing to take less money. He is all about getting paid and getting large guarantees.

He is just telling MINN to "put up or shut up". They keep saying they are bringing him back, but the easiest way to prove it is to guarantee him some money. They clearly haven't done that. To me it says they don't want to keep paying Peterson, but they don't want to give him what he wants either.

Someone will have to blink first. But I do know that Peterson called JJones and told him he would love to play in DAL.

Obviously you didn't read - or understand - my post. Let me try again:

He is absolutely guaranteed $12.75 million from Minnesota this year (taking away the workout bonus but assuming he reports and plays going forward) OR being cut prior to the season and becoming a UFA - which is what I think he wants anyway. So why in the world would he throw that away for your scenario of $16 million over the next 2 years?

This whole complaint about "guaranteed dollars" is nothing more than a ruse to trick the easily fooled. He wants another big contract with another big signing bonus. $12 million won't do it. Start at $30 million, and then you'll get his attention.

Too bad for him he is under contract (a deal he freely and willingly signed in good faith) with another team through 2017.

The talk of guaranteed money is just calling their bluff. He doesn't need guaranteed money from MINN, if they play him they have to pay him. He just wants them to make a non-verbal commitment.

He knows he could show up and practice all summer and then get cut Sept 5th and get nothing. He just wants to get cut before then so he can get to Oxnard.

He wants out of MINN and they want him gone. Worst case is he stays and sulks and plods his way through 12.75m worth of carries.

MINN needs to forget pride, spite, ego, revenge or whatever else is driving them and just release him.

We saw first hand with Ratliff and Orton that when guys want out they are going to get their way. Why fight to keep someone who doesn't want to be there?

That would be a very expensive move. It wouldn't impact his 2015 income, but would certainly impact his value on the open market next year.

Why in the world would they do that? If they can't get what they want for him (i.e. a first rounder) then they will keep him, play him, and once all the whining subsides, he will do his best to have a good season because he knows that is in his best interests.

If you think Kyle Orton is even remotely analogous to Adrian Peterson, then you need to learn quite a bit about football.
