Scout’s Eye: CB Rotation, DeMarcus Lawrence’s Development, More

I think we’re starting to see the combination and rotation of the cornerbacks that the coaching staff is likely to go with once we get to training camp.Orlando Scandrick and Brandon Carr have been the starters with Byron Jones filling in on both sides, while Tyler Patmon, Corey White and Robert Steeples have backed them up. Steeples is a player I haven’t written much about while he has been filling in for Morris Claiborne. The scouting report on Steeples is that he is a quiet kid that is very serious about his job. I like what I have seen from the standpoint of his physical makeup. He is over 6-foot and 193 pounds with a rangy, long build. His timed speed in college was in the low 4.5’s and his movement skills appear to have some merit, but there are some snaps where you see him struggle with his change of direction and overall quickness. With his cover skills, knowledge and physical build might be a guy that you would consider working as a safety if he does struggle on the outside with his quickness. He hasn’t played there in these first two weeks of camp but keep an eye on that possibility as we go forward.

The last couple of opportunities that we in the media have had to observe practice, DeMarcus Lawrence has been on and off the field. That might be a concern, but I was told that on the days that we have not been watching (Tuesday and Thursday), he has been working well.

Unless he isn't healthy because of his gun shot wound, but I think it would be a cost effective no brainer.

I wish we would've went for Ridley. Yes he has fumble issues but so does Demarco and we did fine with him. Ridley is very talented

Maybe it's because we have 3,000 linebackers in camp and only 5 running backs, including two who are limited right now. Plus, we know what Hitchens can do. McFadden and Williams both have a lot to prove if either is going to emerge as the No. 1 back. And then there's the fact that both of the running backs who are injured have been plagued in their careers by injury issues.

So I think it has less to do with him not being a running back than other factors. It would be more like if Sean Lee were injured. There would be a whole bunch of drama despite the fact he's not a running back. Or even Rolando, whose surgery already has brought out some drama.

It's understandable given the players ... again, like it would be if it happened to Lee.

It doesn't mean anything at this point, but when you have players with an injury history, there's a tendency to be concerned when they are injured ... no matter how minor it might seem.

I think it would be silly to panic about it, but it bears watching. Of course, I'm also one in favor of bringing in every starting-caliber running back available and letting attrition sort them out.
