Sabin: Would Cowboys kick tires on this two-time 1,000-yard rusher?

Cowboys beat writer Rainer Sabin answered questions in a chat Tuesday. Here are some highlights.

http://www.***BANNED-URL***/incoming/20130809-lbsg.jpg.ece/BINARY/w940/LBSG.JPG
Shonn Greene, RB, Titans -- Instead of 'two yards and a cloud of dust' in the Jets offense, he'll now underachieve as Chris Johnson's backup.

Question: How much credence do you put in the McClain doesn't like to practice motif? I heard he's at minicamp which is a step in the right direction but this kid could be so special if he screwed his head on straight

Rainer Sabin: From my perspective, he doesn't seem terribly enthusiastic on the practice field. At times, his body language suggests he doesn't want to be there. But there are plenty of stories about players who don't like practice and then show up on game day when it counts.

Question: It appears the Titans are going to release Shonn Greene. Any chance the Cowboys kick the tires?

Rainer Sabin: I could see the Cowboys taking a look at any running back. But Greene's yards per carry average isn't that impressive and he's older than Darren McFadden, Joseph Randle, Lance Dunbar and Ryan Williams.

Question: Why don't the Eagles just keep their mouths shut instead of talking trash about the Cowboys? I feel like the Commanders and Giants don't do it as much as the Eagles do.

Rainer Sabin: I haven't heard this trash talk. So I can't offer a response.

Not interested at all. Any back Dallas acquires had better be able to be a solid number one or be able to do more than Greene offers to make it worth the bother. It is a bit late in the game to think that anyone available right now will be better than what we felt it was okay to ignore the position in the draft.

I disagree. Greene averaged 4.2 yards on almost 100 carries last year. His first year with Tennessee (2013) wasn't very good, but he was coming off back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons for the Jets (the 3.9 YPC in 2012 wasn't great, but the 4.2 in 2011 was fine).
His wear and tear also isn't awful at 993 career carries (McFadden has more than 1,000; Murray has 934 in four years) and his career to this point is arguably better than anything we've got.

Are there backs I'd rather have? Certainly, but I'll take any proven competition Dallas is willing to bring in at this point.

And we continue talking about scrubs.

Heel mein words: we will roux the day we let our 1,800-yard rusher go.
As good as our offense be we still need the ground game. That is a fact of life. If we half to abandon the ground game and go aerial, the opposing linebackers will be free to wreck havoc on the mid-field zone and our corners will be double teamed. then, in December, we be at 9-7, hoping for a wild card.
I cannot stress the loss we half incured without Murray. But that is spilt milk under the bridge of yesterday when all our troubles seemed so far away. Now it looks as if their hear to stay.

Go ahead, let us discuss ever scrub who is leafing a team. Let us disucss Randle and McFadden and the other midgets. I am blinded by tears of a clown and I wish Jerra had a backup plan to rb.

Sure, Raiders let a guy go and "let's sign him up!"
Titans, another bad team letting a guy go and we say, we say: "let us sign him up!"

Do anyone detect a pattern here? A bad one?

The only pattern is amongst fans and media. The team certainly hasn't brought in any backs to challenge randle or McFadden for a starting spot. Simply bottom of the roster players.

But we did bring in McFadden. Obviously the always "high-energy and always dangerous" Raiders did not want him, so we took him. And we half Randle, basically a scrub. That is what worry me.
Signed, a worrier in Farmers Branch.

Randle hasn't been a starter yet. How do you know he's a scrub.

It is hard to take away what Murray did, you simply cannot. However the facts surrounding his special season cannot be ignored either. The build of this line,a contract year which he "miraculously" played all games, an offense that gave him an opportunity to do what he did by committing to the ground game. If given the same opportunities and some luck in the health department no reason to think the run Game won't be productive.

we are churning, hey i thought Days would be good, and hes off the team. So lets se ewhat they are looking for, remember our RBs are going to be part of the offense scheme not just running the ball, so its going to be a more tedious choice. and thats ok. lets just wait for the end result and what comes of it. the two rbs in the draft we had no chance at and frankly our draft was solid with potential so im not going to cry because the team didnt take my ideas. but they dont want CJ and thats ok, cant have every player. SO far they arent sitting pat either which i like. IF they cant beat out dunbar so be it they dont belong on the team and if we go into the season with Dunbar, hes a cowboy we back him. lets see what the brass does with the pieces.

There is no backup plan. Joe Randle is our plan.

Green may be good for 100 -150 carries here. He is a power runner and we dont have that

lol... I'm not shocked that we actually have fans that would want ANOTHER scrub RB on our team.
