Bob Sturm's 2016 NFL draft profile series: Believe the hype -- DE Joey Bosa could be exactly what Cowboys desire

Joey Bosa, DE, Ohio State - 6'6, 275 - Junior - #97

Every draft has its household names that are repeated time and time again for a full year before April arrives and we finally find out if we can believe the hype that has been bestowed on a few players all along. Their names are often used in the title of the year, such as, "2016 was the Joey Bosa Draft."

The formula for such a phenomenon is when a fantastic program produces a fantastic prospect and then he is on full display all year long. Everyone who cares about this process knows who Bosa is and what makes him one of the top prospects, so it does color your perception in a study like this. Sometimes, I prefer to know very little about a player when the tape comes on. But, with Bosa, you know so much that you cannot help but have a very high bar of expectations which can often work against a player.

That said, Bosa is a legitimate game wrecker. He has everything you look for in a 1st rounder at DE. Does he have 10 sack potential in the NFL with an array of moves along with attributes that offer power and speed? Yes. Does he also answer the bell on running plays? Absolutely. The question is whether he is very good or elite at the next level. That is the difference in expectations when choosing between #1 overall and #25 overall...

If I were trying to fix the Dallas pass rush, I would resign Hardy and draft Bosa.

A rotation of Gregory/Lawrence and Hardy/Bosa....would change things around.

That would be superfluous, use that Hardy money on a good DT and a CB.

The team could still commit to a quality cornerback in free agency, and take a round 2 defensive tackle.

Unless he can play RDE or 3 technique, I don't see him being the pick.

Interesting

Haven't been a big fan, but that's a good writeup. He's obviously not JJ Watt, but one thing to consider is Watt didn't have great sack #s coming out of school either. The fact that he's 20 is a very big plus

Watt is insanely athletic though and his first step is one of the best I have seen.

I just don't get Bosa hype. When i watch him on tape I see DE who lacks twitch and speed to get to QB on consistent basis. . Very strong but I need QB sacks not guy who can just seal edge. Outside of his bull-rush move he has no moves. RT will quickly eat that up if that's all he has. Looks more like DT to me. In way looks like beefed up Mike Mamula out there. I like him...just not at #4.

Judge for yourself. Watch and let us know how he is getting to QB at NFL level.

CC, some here would call that "overkill", or "throwing too many resources at one area," but I would welcome that move, along with attempting to add Rams' CB Trumaine Johnson if he's available.

True, and that was evident on tape too. Still don't see the same explosiveness from Bosa.

Watt is a physical freak who works harder than anyone else, but he had the exact same knocks as Bosa coming out--seriously nearly identical. His first step was actually considered a weakness before the draft.

"Doesn't possesses great initial quickness but closes hard and fast on the quarterback and has enough straight-lined speed to pursue from the backside.

WEAKNESSES
Won't consistently get the edge on tackles with his get off or quickness. Plays high at times, can be blown off the ball by the double team, but does fight hard to hold ground. Lacks some lateral mobility both rushing the passer and playing in space. Will occasionally give up outside contain."

Watt's greatest asset isn't even his strength, quickness or motor, his greatest asset is his hands. He sheds blocks better than anyone I have ever seen. He plays like he is coated in teflon. Bosa isn't as good as Watt is in that area, but it is also one of his strengths.

Even with Bosa trending down, I still think he is the right pick at 4 if he's there, if they don't address DE in free agency. Depending on what the team does in free agency, he could be a luxury pick, though.

Theoretically, if we return to the offense of 2014, Bosa wouldn't be overkill at all. In fact, you could rotate linemen in and keep the pass rush and run-stopping fresh.

Chris Long is maybe a better comparison than Watt. Drafted 2nd overall in 2008 by the Rams and a LDE. Also the son of a DL.

The wild card is whether this team might feel he can play inside at the 3. He's played inside some. He uses his hands really well. He's not really high cut or long-legged despite being listed at 6-6 (betting he's not quite that tall). As he's still really young, i don't think 15-20 lbs is out of the question at all. That motor and size and technique would potentially be a great 3tech.

You can tell he's gotten some pro schooling about the finer points of being a defensive lineman. Is that making him look better in college than he really is?

Same..

Overrated bigtime imo.

Wow! I'm having a flashback to 1991!

Russell Maryland was drafted #1 in 1991. He was not considered an elite d-lineman but he was a key player in Dallas' front line. What's interesting is if Hardy is re-signed and Dallas trades for or signs a free agent DB, it would parallel the Maryland pick and the signing of Haley and Thomas Everett in 1991. Could it be the start of something great if Dallas drafts Bosa?

but is he worth the 4th pick when we already have a good rising DE in lawrence on the strong side?

I am really warming up to Bosa at it appears there is a chance he could be there at 4.

But I am still on board with taking another player at 4 (or trading down) and then taking Spence in the 2nd round (or trade up into the late first). I think that kid is going to be a total stud.

I'd rather have Spence than Bosa.

Bosa is more of a natural DE. Lawrence had to get bulked up.

And while I think Lawrence did well, he seems to come on more at the end of the year. I'd like to see a little more year-long consistency.

But I see your point. I really haven't studied Bosa that much. So I'm just evaluating him based on what draftniks and scouts have said about him.
