NY Post: Muhammad Ali placed on life support

Legendary boxer Muhammad Ali is reportedly on life support at a Phoenix area hospital Friday after being hospitalized for respiratory issues that are complicated by Parkinson’s.

A source close to the family told Reuters that the 74-year-old boxing great is in “grave” condition and “it’s only a matter of hours.”

A spokesman for Ali said in a statement earlier Thursday that the former heavyweight champion is being treated at an unidentified hospital for a respiratory issue.

Ali's longtime Parkinson's doctor declined comment when reached by the AP Thursday night.

"I can't really say much more than what's in the papers," said Dr. Abraham Lieberman of the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix.

Muhammad Ali, 'The Greatest of All Time', Dead at 74
by JON SCHUPPE

Muhammad Ali, the silver-tongued boxer and civil rights champion who famously proclaimed himself "The Greatest" and then spent a lifetime living up to the billing, is dead.

Ali died Friday at a Phoenix-area hospital, where he had spent the past few days being treated for respiratory complications, a family spokesman confirmed to NBC News. He was 74.

"After a 32-year battle with Parkinson's disease, Muhammad Ali has passed away at the age of 74. The three-time World Heavyweight Champion boxer died this evening," Bob Gunnell, a family spokesman, told NBC News.

Ali had suffered for three decades from Parkinson's Disease, a progressive neurological condition that slowly robbed him of both his legendary verbal grace and his physical dexterity. A funeral service is planned in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky.

Great boxer/entertainer. I didn't agree with a lot of his political/social stances and thought he said many things from ignorance in his time, but exciting to watch.

I was 14. The fight was on radio.....just AM then. We drove over 30 miles until we found a spot reliable to hear. It was on the levy of a dam. Clay beat Liston badly just as he said he would. I still remember it vividly. It was the sound of history.
