In 2001, Dungy had put together one of the best defenses of all time. In 1983, his Steelers had the 7th ranked defense. Spagnuolo is in his second year here but he has so many new starters he cannot reasonably have as many tricks in his bag properly prepared. If he blitzes and someone misses an assignment then it's an easy read.

Elway famously never had a running game until Shanahan came along. Dak has the best running attack in the NFL. His OL outside of the C were not worth a flip and 83 was Bishops first year starting. Let's just say Smith, Sharpe, McCaffrey, and Davis were not yet on the team.

Dungy's defense strategy only works if you are playing an offense that plays into the fear of having a rookie QB and doesn't let him throw.
Dungy said to stack the box to stop the run on 1 and 2nd down which will get you beat deep if your Offensive coordinator doesn't call play action and let the QB throw the ball.

Basically what Dungy did was predict what the rookie QB and his OC would call. He was usually right and opposing teams played into his hands and paid the price.
I hope we let Dak play QB and not try to protect him to a fault. Let him play action and move the pocket ect.

While this is certainly true, this OL has a history of running into heavy boxes. NYG doesn't have a good tackling back 7 either.

Pfft beating Quincy Carter as a rookie is not an accomplishment. Dak is not Quincy Carter in any way shape or form. I really lost interest when the article mentioned Quincy.

Yeah, rookie quarterbacks never win ...
  • Andrew Luck rookie season .. Colts .. 11 wins, 5 losses
  • RGIII rookie season .. Commanders .. 10 wins, 6 losses
  • Mark Sanchez rookie season .. Jets .. 9 wins, 7 losses
  • Colin Kaepernick rookie season .. 49ers .. 13 wins, 3 losses
  • Russell Wilson rookie season .. Seahawks .. 11 wins, 5 losses
Plus Dak is seasoned, how many rookies have a Masters? The NFL is not ready for the Rayne, they are just whistling by the graveyard.

Dungy's right.

Dak will struggle if he has to throw all game.

Our only hope is that Zeke and Morris can keep the offense out of 3rd and long and make things tougher on the Giants D

Well,****.

Hopefully, Dak's running ability and complete offense separates him from these other rookies.

For the most part rookie QBs play on awful teams.. I'm not exactly sure why he pointed out Quincy Carter. That team was especially awful.

We actually ran the option because Barry Switzer told Jerry it would work.

The NYG will try to put 8 on the box and that running game will exploit it all afternoon. Nice try Tony.

Dak is going to pick those fools apart thanks to a stout running game highlighted by the coming out of Zeke the FREAK.

IM not so sure new york is going to put 8 in the box. traditionally they double witten and dez as much as possible.

I feel like because of that defensive line they are not going to sell out to stop the run. Collins will be roaming around but i don't think its going to be 1985 football sunday. I don't see anyway they leave DRC or Apple one on one with Dez. So if we are in s11 personnel and they are in nickel there is really no way for them to do that. DRC kicks inside and apple on dez so the safety will have to help, plus witten.

If we used the I formation and a fullback and were running lead draws I could understand all of the this talk about 8 in the box or the laughable 9 in the box. Its just a dumb strategy in my opinion.

Playing Dez 1:1 would be silly with even a half competent QB. Dak has shown that he's not afraid to let his receivers make plays on the ball in those situations. He even got Witten to snatch one against Seattle in the end zone. Add that he throws a perfect back shoulder fade, which is tough to defend 1 on 1. If a corner breaks on the ball and loses, it is a TD.

Some good points.

But rarely do Rookies who are thrust onto the field so early have the kind of offense the Cowboys do.

Usually this is a situation for a team that is in clear rebuild... Aka the Eagles with Wentz.

Great point, 1st few picks of the draft go to the worst record from the previous year. Quincy being a 2nd round pick was only because we didn't have a 1st that year because of the Galloway trade. Smith, Elway were all top of the 1st picks.

We can keep it simple with an emphasis on the running game, short to intermediate passes, then when they least expect it, Boom! hit em with a deep pass. I'm sure our game plan is controlling the clock. A defensive turnover or two would help.

I'll bet they open with a quick pass.

No surprise here -- Tony Dungy, as well as most coaches, will see to it that as much pressure is applied to an opponent's rookie QB as might be possible. It's something that will be thrown in his path with each and every play in every game.

I believe that the Giants will discover for themselves that Dak isn't the average rookie QB. He's had time to prepare himself for what promises to be a tough test of his ability to perform under the kind of stress that might stifle most rookie QBs. Up until now, he has stood up to what has been thrown at him, although this test will be one that's more severe and under more challenging circumstances.

We're about to see if he's able to overcome the obstacles that each team concocts to thwart him. So far he's passed every test. His talent, poise and intelligence will be severely tested come Sunday. Wish him well. I would suggest it's a good bet that New York's defense will be severely tested by their rookie opponent. In fact, I think they might be shocked to see how much that's the case. With that in mind, enjoy the game!

Wait. This is news to you?

Go Cowboys, bro.
I'm being cautiously optimistic. He, like a few of the other rookies QBs to have success, had mobility.

I haven't heard you comment much about Dak. What's your opinion about him? Bro.

GO COWBOYS!!! I like your spirit and consistent spunk as a fan.

I think T. Will is the sleeper to have a big day because of this.

Dak will be looking for single coverage and T. Will is going to get and he can beat single coverage down field.

I wouldn't be surprised if he catches 4 or 5 passes and has close to 100 yards and a touchdown.

I think contract year T. Will could have a big year. He's got the talent.

What Dungy said is true, but.......it's not like it used to be. Roethlisberger had early success. So did Wilson. Others have done reasonably well.

This situation is ideal for Prescott because he has a tremendous amount of talent around him. That's not normally the case. I don't expect him to light it up, but I do think he'll do fine, and I do think Dallas wins this game on Sunday.
