If he comes back and goes down again then the Cowboys would have to give him away or cut him.

That would only save us about 5 million on the cap. My understanding the rest of his salary would be a huge cap hit. Best way out is a trade.

In 2018 without Romo would save 25.2 million in cap space and 23.7 million in 2019. Financially speaking that flexibility would be a boon for the Cowboys.

There is also the possibility that due to his affinity for the Cowboys , Romo could allow the club to release him for the June 1st casualty . Then the 2017 prorated bonus (10.7 million) would hit the cap next year , giving Dallas the savings of Romo's entire 2017 contract base salary, 14 million.

If that were the case then the 8.9 million prorated amounts for 2018 and 2019 would then be on the 2018 cap dead money, That would mean the Cowboys would save 10.6 million on the 2018 cap and still the same 23.7 million in 2019 space ,

Teams with Rookies and or young QB's in their first contract are able to build teams quickly without the Cap usually invested in a franchise QB.

Being that Dak wasn't a first round pick Dak's contract season will be 2019, Romo's last contract season. We could basically be in a position to offer Dak a franchise type extended contract without seeing him in a full season.

And never having the additional cap space luxury to expend on immediate FA support or retaining other top players on the roster.

I do not see any scenario in which Romo is offered up in a trade and I'm pretty sure he has a "no trade" clause in his contract. The only possible one would be they make Dak the starter over Romo but I do not see that happening unless Romo is injured then he'll retire.

While that might be a benefit to the team, emphasis on might, I don't care. It was no fun seeing Cowboys like Calvin Hill, Tony and Emmitt wearing another team's colors. Under no circumstances do I want to see that #9 in anything but our colors. I didn't even like seeing Namath and Montana wearing other colors.

Doubtful because his contract is too big.

The cap implications are limited in a trade.

Because of how NFL salary cap accounting works, the financial ramifications retiring and the team choosing to cut him are aligned in most ways.

There's no mention of a no trade clause in his contract according to Cowboyswire. Com

This isn't about what we want. It might be about what's best for the Cowboys if we have a less expensive alternative adding much cap space without losing much production if any.

There will be a market for him. There will always be teams who can make 20M work for a season and there will always be teams who need a QB, even for a year or 2. I could see him landing us a 3rd rounder for him. That said, that would depend on Tony wanting to play for said team. Otherwise, I think he'd retire.

Rom will be here and start until he is permanently injured, he retires, or some injury causes him he be able to play, but just can't be a starter.
Or he wins the SB this year, returns for one more year then retires.

I say he has this year and next year. Dak must take over during his 3rd year and prove he really is the guy or else we may lose him to FA after his 4th year.
No matter what, they will need to prepare to pay Romo and Dak for a few years until Romo retires.

The additional cap space might afford a couple of DL and or another WR in next couple of years in FA.
