Witten vs Shannon sharpe in a 40 yard dash

With one more TD, Witten will pass Sharpe in that category (tied at 62). He has already dwarfed him in catches and yards.

I bet Shannon thinks his dad could beat up Witten's dad too.

Yes, there's no doubt that Sharpe was and probably still is a superior athlete. If he had combined that with Witten's understanding of how to play the position, there's no telling what kind of numbers he would have put up. Some guys just get by on being the better athlete and don't put in the work on the details of the game because of their natural skills. IMO, that was Shannon Sharpe.

Not saying that he was a bad player, far from it, but he was not as good as he could have been if he had had a Witten work ethic.

That 4.65 40 time is very fast for tight end.
We all know he's nowhere near that now.

Also, here's an excerpt from an article discussing TE speed

---
"Here's a sample of some of the league's better receiving threats and the 40 times:
Tyler Eifert, Bengals - 4.68
Jermaine Gresham, Bengals - 4.66
Martellus Bennett, Bears - 4.68
Rob Gronkowski, Patriots - 4.69
Julius Thomas - 4.64
Jason Witten - 4.65

Even Aaron Hernandez, a guy who was considered to be as athletic as a wide receiver, only ran a 4.64 (and is now, you know, on trial for murder). Rarely do guys who run in the 4.5 range or better emerge as top-tier receiving threats (Graham's 4.53 is an exception)."

_______

Yep, there aren't many guys that weight 250lbs that can truck a 4.4 40. Though Larry Allen was nuts running a 4.6 40 at 325lbs. That's just plain stupid.

Actually, I think he's really close to those same combine 40 numbers....just in a different order. :)

Kristine is gorgeous, don't get me wrong. She is just to "easy breezy" blond for me. I used to love her. Now, I find her grating. Always talking about dating and such. She knows nothing of sports, outside of random basketball anecdotes.

She is a doll, I'll give her that, 86. I guess with a wizard like Colin, you don't need much more than a looker, so she does that well. Love The Herd.

Joy destroys her in professionalism, IMO.

All true, I was just referring to how attractive I find them. Didn't say anything about sports knowledge ;)

Anyone who thinks Witten is slow is fooling themselves, we've seen him beat safeties on slants. He's slow after the catch because it takes him several steps to get going, but when he's running routes he is fast!

Heard this on undisputed this morning. I don't think it's as outlandish as you may think despite the age difference. Sharpe was confident (not in an arrogant way) he could beat Witten in a 40.

I would LOVE to see this. I tweeted Jerry and the Cowboys. Hopefully it can happen and proceeds can go to charity or something.

Edit: sharpe said he'd prolly pull both hamstrings but believes he would still win

With those two, it would be more of a 40 Yard Mosey...

Witten never really used speed to win even when he was much younger. Witten mastered the art of getting everything possible out of the fact that he is 6-6, 265 and has better hands than most WRs that have ever played.

Shape in contrast is/was 6-2, 228. He had to have some speed to win because is was smaller than most LBs and not much bigger than some DBs.

I think I could beat Witten in a straight line foot race, but he could likely cut right-left-right before I was finished cutting to the right. He still has good change of direction quickness.

I'll take Witten right now.. Easy to talk from the booth.

Keith Jackson ran a 4.4 40 when he was at the University of Oklahoma. What a unique combination of size and speed. A freak of nature.

I just watched this, too. So funny. Love the show. Joy Taylor is a treat to watch, too.

Did Witten run at the combine?

One reason Witten has done so well for so long is that his game as never been about athleticism. He's the tight end version of Tim Duncan, The Big Fundamental.

Yes sir!
