LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Rams agreed to hire longtime NFL coach Wade Phillips to be their defensive coordinator on Thursday night, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Phillips, 69, will work under 30-year-old Sean McVay, who was brought in earlier on Thursday to serve as the youngest NFL head coach in the Super Bowl era.

Phillips takes on the role vacated by Gregg Williams, who left to become defensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns last week.

Phillips got his first NFL coaching job in 1976, 10 years before McVay was born.

Since then, he has spent 25 seasons as a defensive coordinator with seven different teams. He also was head coach of the Denver Broncos (1993 to '94), Buffalo Bills (1998 to 2000) and Dallas Cowboys (2007 to '10), and he served as interim coach for the New Orleans Saints (1985), Atlanta Falcons (2003) and Houston Texans (2013).

So, they hire a great D cord in Wade yet hire a defensive minded HC, interesting........

Are they ever going to fix the offense? :D

Interesting. I wonder how the Rams defensive personnel will function in a 3-4? Donald is a beast and can function in any system but who in the hell are the OLBs going to be?

He can coach a 4-3. They have the DL to be great. Ur right. They need to fix the offense. Best get some offensive players.

It would be interesting if Wade switches them to a 3-4, they have talented players on D. if anyone could do it, it's prolly Wade. He's a proven DC.

Donald was the first person I thought of. I think Wade's 3-4 might relagate him grunt work to make plays for LBs. He could go from Pro Bowl to Olshanski.

Wondering same thing. How does their best player fair in wade's system? Talking bout Donald. Great D couch but puzzling move.
