Worst case scenario is we will likely get a 3rd rd comp pick if he leaves

Then we'll be in worse shape than we were this year. He's obviously on the downside of his career.
I don't disagree that Free should be replaced, but IMO, he's never had a real upside. He's never been much more than a jag.

The only way I see Free gone is if they're really confident in one of the young guys. I think there's zero chance they bring in a FA unless they really find a bargain.

Something has to happen regarding Free's contract. He's got a completely unmanageable cap hit of $7.5 million for 2017. Pay cut or get cut.

And I think now is the time where you reassess his work, and his obvious struggles and declining level of play, and you do something about it. Whether that's Green, Cleary, Collins, free agent, draft pick, whatever.

But it's obvious he's not worth his current cost, he's on the downside, and he's the line's weakest link. Something has to give.

If Leary signs near a four year, 15 million deal elsewhere I'd be livid. That's worth resigning him for that market

Parnell got 5-32 million with the Jags. Leary is a better player. He won't be cheap.

Different position though so he may get a little less.

I think he'll get in the four year, 25-30 million. Similar to Jeff Allen.

As must as I like Leary, it's best to let him go with the salary he'll command on the open market.

Roll with Collins and a (hopefully) high compensatory draft pick in 2018. I think I'd take Collins with his lower salary plus a 3rd/4th round pick next year over Leary.

I am likely missing something obvious here. Free is a $7.5MM cap hit. Cut him and you save $5MM. Shift that $5MM in cap space over to Leary + whatever else it will take to get the deal done, Collins/Green/Draft pick to RT.

I'd rather spend $7MM a year on Leary than $7.5MM on Free.

I don't see it. 3rd round comp picks are usually for elite FAs/contracts. I see at best a 4th, similar to Jeremy Parnell, maybe even a 5th.

Anyone care to hazard a guess about who will sign him and what his contract will cost? We get a one year rental on Collins and then he will have to be signed or hit the market too.

Would it be better to resign Leary and trade Collins? He might bring a high pick and offset Learys cap hit.

That's the right move, right there. Trade Collins for a high pick. Or, move Collins to right tackle.

If Leary leaves, there will be a downgrade in the offensive line. Period.

If all it takes is 4 years 15 million to re-sign him then they really need to consider resigning him. I was thinking twice that much even with his knee.

At the end of the day, if Leary wants to leave Dallas he'll leave Dallas. All of the other suggested gyrations are irrelevant if he wants a change of scenery.

Keep a guy with a degenerative knee condition who is going to be one of the top ten paid guards in the league? Or keep a younger more physically gifted kid at a fraction of the cost. You are right. Its a business.

Brice Butler is the most physically gifted WR on the team but his production was spotty. Its about production, not athleticism or salary or draft position.

If its similar to the Waters contract is probably something like 15 Million guaranteed over 3 years with a big non-guaranteed 4th year with a salary of 8 or 9 Million. If that is the market rate they should pay it, they have a ton of cap space.
