There may be one of these out there, forgive my naivete. Anyway, I've been a whiskey fan for quite some time. I had tried some whiskys but have only recently been digging deeper into scotch.

Would love to hear some opinions on a good scotch or two. So far, one of my favorites is The Balvenie 12-year Doublewood. It's fairly rich and pretty sweet, and incredibly smooth. Although my tastes vary with my mood, these characteristics seem to be what attract me most often (I'd recommend them in a wife, too).

Any suggestions? And yes, I've had Jerry's drink of choice, Johnny Blue, and wasn't terribly impressed. Not that it was bad, just not what I'd spend that kind of coin on.

I keep it simple, I love Johnnie Walker Black in blended and Glenlevit in single malt. Don't want to try any of the more expensive stuff, I'm afraid I'd like it.
 
Scotch is really personal. I typically drink Lagavulin 16 (Islay) or Glenmorangie. Lagavulin is very definitely an acquired taste.

For Bourbon, give me Woodford or Bulliet Rye.

Cannot stand Johnnie Walker for whatever reason. It's got a tell-tale funk that I can't get around.

I've had a thing against JW and Bud going back to my high school days. Not sure what it is, both just taste skunky to me. Even mixed in coke, I can hardly get it down.

Blue is the exception. It still tastes like Johnie Walker, but it's pretty damn smooth even with the skunk. Somebody gave me a bottle of it at a party a year or two back, and I've got it sitting there on my shelf because it's too good to waste on regular company but I don't quite like it enough to drink it with my family.

It's especially weird because Lagavulin has a reputation for tasting like cigarette water drunk out of a sneaker, but I somehow acquired a taste for it neat. Well, I do water my scotch with about 1/2 oz of water, but otherwise I drink it neat.

LoL there was a time (after half way through a bottle a scotch) I'd cut my tumbler with about half tablespoon of spa water being how I was firmly residing in it anyway, just enough to open it up/let it breathe and bring up that translucent oily shimmery Sheen to the top,,,whew! I recall those days.

I like Woodford quite a bit. Not a huge rye fan but partake on occasion and Bulliet is fine.

I agree with you about JW.

Outside Johnny most of my scotch experience is single malt. Oban 14 is solid but Balvenie has caught my attention in a big way. There's so much on the market nowadays I'm just wondering if any more experienced scotch guys or gals have any recommendations.

For instance Highland Park and Mac seem to be popular in my neck of the woods but I've not gone there yet.

I've settled down on my scotch drinking/cigar smoking in recent years, though.
 
I like 18 year old Glenlivet with a splash or two of club soda on the rocks. Been wanting to get a bottle the past two weeks but we've picked up beer again as of late.
 
Dalwhinnie 15 is really nice. Glenfiddich 15 is also one of my fav's in the $60 range. Blue Label and Glenlivet 21 are my most expensive bottles at the moment and both well worth the cost. Got a Glenmorangie 18 for christmas but have not opened it yet.
 
Sounds like you're doing alright. The doublewood is the best 12 yr speyside scotch.

Agreed it's a personal choice.

I'm more of a Islay drinker myself, so Lagavulin is really up there for me.

It's funny though. On Facebook I keep seeing this Laphroig ad pop up where they are having people drink some on a blind taste test-- and I can't help but wonder how many people they had to go through to get people that would enjoy it.

Bowmore is my go to Islay because of bang for $$, but I haven't run into one I don't like.
