News: BTB:Why The Dallas Cowboys Should Try To Renegotiate Tony Romo’s Contract

If I was Romo, there's no way I would redo my contract. Romo has money and has a post-football career waiting for him, so why would he want to restructure his contract to take less money and increase the risk Dallas would keep him as a backup?

Right now, that huge contract with the $24.7m salary cap hit this year is exactly why he will either be traded or released. If Romo restructured, then the Cowboys would very likely realize that keeping him as a backup would be a much better plan than releasing him and if he decides to retire after restructuring, even better.

The problem for the Cowboys is that no team wants Romo's contract AND have to give up decent draft picks for him. The Cowboys are simply going to wait it out and see if a team blinks or gets desperate. They have the cap room to handle his contract right now so there's no sense of urgency on the Cowboys part.

As I have already said previously, if I were the Cowboys I would not release Romo until after the draft at the earliest just to see if any team wants to make a deal during or right after the draft if they fail to get any quarterbacks they wanted. If I were Romo, I would sit back and let it play out. He knows he will be released or traded at some point and he knows that he has no control over when that will happen. He should just keep working out and doing his regular off-season routines and eventually this will work itself out.
Romo wouldn't be taking less money......he would have a 5m base salary in 2017-18 guaranteed and 500k in per game incentives.........if traded and healthy that would be 18m by next March and 26m total for 2 years as opposed to 0m guaranteed right now and a total of 14m if he was kept all thru TC....no team is paying him 20m for 2018-19

the new team gets a great cap hit of 5m for 2017 and injury outs....worst case he gets 10m plus 500k for every game played

Romo's entire salary of $14 million becomes 100% guaranteed if he is on the roster week 1. Why in the world would Romo redo his contract down to a $5 million base salary and the rest in per game incentives? Like I said, if he is on the roster week one, his entire $14 million is guaranteed and there is none of this per game crap. Sure the Cowboys could release him and he gets nothing, but in a league where Josh McCown gets $6 million on a one year deal, all guaranteed, I think Romo can nail a good offer on the open market. In fact, if the truth be told, Romo would rather start and make $6 million than be Dak's backup and make $14.

So if I am Romo, I give the Cowboys the middle finger and say a contract is a contract, we are not renegotiating jack. Either honor the contract or release me, those are your options. Romo and his agent are gambling that Dallas is not going to carry a backup QB with a $24.7 million cap charge.

Its probably his contract that limits what other teams want to do. If they trade they take his 14 million dollar deal...when he is released other clubs can negociate something lower?

They can negotiate something with or without a trade.

Contracts can be renegotiated at any time. The only consideration in regards to a previous contract is the guaranteed money that has already been paid. Any team that would potentially trade for Romo would reach an agreement on a new contract prior to execution of the trade so his current contract is only a deterrent if they think they can dirt cheap and he is unwilling to take less money. I doubt either is true.

interesting article, but I somehow can't see him doing a deal like that...perhaps with incentives for games in uniform....
...love tony, wish him the best, wish the cowboys MORE of the best than tony...
Sure he can. The new contract would make him more tradeable and he can make the same money with incentives.

And I really get the sense (through nothing but my gut) that Jerry has really dug his heels in and is not just playing hardball due to the way the Texans and Broncos have been using the media

May even factor into why everyone was allowed to walk. Bracing to absorb the contract if it came to it.

It's not Jerry. Stephen plays hardball and has no soft spot for players. With Stephen, it's all about the money
and team success.

That only happens if Tom Condon his agent and Tony thinks doing so is in his best interest. Only way Tony re-does his deal is if he get
unconditional release immediately upon signing. Freedom is the only reason for re-doing a deal.

At this point all the Cowboys can do is wait. If a QB goes down somewhere in TC maybe they can work out a trade, if not he gets cut. There's no sense wasting a roster spot and 14 mil on a 37 year old guy who cannot stay on the field.
Moore will be #2 and a good developmental guy should be #3.

Maybe. I've got my own personal view of things.

Romo can't be traded without his contract being renegotiated but that can't happen until that third party (the team Tony is traded to) is involved in those negotiations. The third party doesn't have to agree to anything that Tony and the Cowboys agree to.

Candice would like this.

Keep hubby safe
Have hubby bring in easy money
Stay in Dallas with in-laws and new house
Be around before, when, and after new kid is born in August

But by ALL insider accounts, Romo is obsessively competitive--its why he played injured so much and shunned the bars to always be playing some sort of game in his "down" time.

Hard to imagine him settling as backup just yet, and especially when he feels certain (right or wrong) he had 2014 or better left in him.
We know Romo wants to play and that most likely won't happen again for the Cowboys. We also know no other team is currently motivated to take over his contract "as is" with the Cowboys. So if Romo is going to ever play again, one of two things have to happen. Either Romo and the Cowboys have to come to terms with another team on a restructured contract or the less likely scenario of another team becoming motivated to take on the contact "as is" with the Cowboys. How bad does Romo want to play again. You can bet Candace is fully aware of the monetary steaks involved and encouraging Tony to do what is best for their family's future, not just what he wants to do.

Of course. Providing Tony wants to renegociate. Renegociating helps the Cowboys make a trade. Romo ,or his agent, may believe that he is better off, money wise, being cut and making his own deal? Romo is in a good position, if ole Jerry doesn't want to release him he must pay 14 million bucks as a backup and plenty more against the cap.

Released is the other...and by far...more likely option. jmo

I see release as a last resort for the Cowboys after 1 Jun. however, I'm still of the opinion why do that when he would be the best option as the backup QB?

I have been echoing this for weeks. Dallas has every incentive in world to redo Romo contract and keep him on team as back-up.
yeah they he should, but really they need to let him play some games, show that he isnt fragile, and can play good, then
his value goes up.
Tony should take less money/paycut stay as a bkup on condition he can have at least 3 games in the year.
and with bonus for any games he plays.
it would help him get better deal when he leaves.
