We can be 10-6 and better than last year

I don't see a wide open offense with Zeke on board. I suspect we will be very balanced around 50/50 pass/run. That works for me. It's matchups that matter as well as running the right plays at the right time. It's good to be a little predictable as long as you throw in a curveball on occasion. That keeps them honest.

IF we get pressure and 40+ sacks then the DBs will have help and that opens up the schemes and non-front four blitzes. If we don't then Marinelli will have to resort to stacking the DBs to get the pass defense we need. It won't be as good as having adequate pass pressure but it will be the best he can do. That's when you blitz your LBers some and bring your corner blitzes then pray you aren't caught doing so.

Pressure and pass defense are the keys and without them you have to game around it which is just not as good.
Well I understand what you're saying but running a wide-open offense doesn't mean we can't run the ball. I just don't want to lose the misdirection because Zeke was killer on those last year. I like to run 3 and 4 wide and get Zeke a little closer to the line of scrimmage, once he breaks out he'll only have to make maybe one guy miss. I want to keep them guessing on defense but I don't want to see Rush 3 on 3rd and long, because the next play is 1st and 10. You can rush for and still play all kinds of games with the back seven.

I am thinking next year ( 2018 ) is our year, but barring any significant injuries, we should be as good as last year this year, but I think 13-3 is out of the question, 10-6 sounds good. I believe we become a much more exciting team this year and get a few key players next year to make a major Super Bowl run.

I said 50/50 which is about what we did last year. I agree with the misdirection and play action. We can rush 4 but we only had 34 sacks last year and a significant number was not front 4. Sending LBers and DBs changes schemes.

I agree with the OP. We could be a better team and finish worse than 13-3.
Personally, I have us at 11-5. However, I too am concerned about our revised
offensive line as well as our young secondary.

It is possible to be a better team and have a worse record. A lot went right last year including health. On the other hand, maybe Dez will catch it next time.

It doesn't matter much what the record is as long as we qualify for the postseason. I'm not sure we'll be better, but we'll have a chance to advance farther.

Our limitations will continue to come on the defensive side of the ball...where the problems have been for years. The coaching staff in Dallas is an asset, and not a liability.

The smart money agrees with you, but the season often throws us curve balls. We might end up having the defense perform better than the offense this year. You just never really know.

What if Tapper and Jaylon set the world on fire, and the rookies all man up like our rookies did last year? The defense could be much improved. I know. It's optimistic. I will pledge to not be so optimistic going forward.

I think the coaching staff is one of the biggest obstacles holding us back.

I'm sure a lot of people do. Some people think coaching was a serious problem last year v. GB. But the actual issue was not being able to slow down Rodgers early.

This defense has been the Achilles heal of this team for years now. People give that fact lip service, but when it comes down to it, a lot of fans are willing to give it a pass year after year after year for some reason.

The offense came out flat, and looked unprepared. We abandoned the run in key situations several times, which is a HUGE reason we went 13-3. Linehan tried to get cute with the play calling when we'd throw on 3rd and shorts. Yes, the defense has always been a problem. The play calling (and of course that spike) was bad. Garrett should have had all the starters play in the eagles game. Garrett is a Coward.

When Romo went down most here thought 8 - 8 at best. I did. We ended up 13 - 3. 5 game swing.

Now with better defensive parts in place - well a learning curve is in this group.
When we turn the corner on defense watch out.

I doubt we are 3 games from being a lesser team. 10 - 6.

This keeps coming up in various threads. All I'll say about it in this one is "go back and look at the play by play." It doesn't match what you're describing here.

The second guessing of resting starters is just that. Had he played them and we'd lost the game you'd be saying he's an idiot for doing that.

And, for the record, which players who were rested did you think played poorly in the playoff game anyway?

If not playing all of the starters in the final regular season game(s) was enough to cause them to lose against Green Bay, then they probably were not good enough to get to or win a Super Bowl anyway.

The 92, 93 Cowboys could have rested the starters for a few months and still would have won the Super Bowl.

By the way, this is pretty much a textbook example of what I'm talking about when I say they give the defensive issues lip service, but never really want to hold it accountable. Again, with the play by play, look at those early GB drives and what Rodgers did to us. It should be obvious.

Sometimes, and with a young roster, the team requires seasoning in the playoff rounds. The team has an intense memory of Green Bay. Mix that with a black 'n blue December, and this moto might once again return: It shall be done!

We just need a few better defensive players. And we need at least one of them to be true impact player the way Elliott or Dez are. If we have that, we advance in 2014 and 2016.

Did you read my reply? I said the defense was bad. You're acting like that was the ONLY problem that game.
