Can somebody please explain how the NBA salary cap works?

Klay Thompson makes $18 million, Draymond Green makes $15 million, Kevon Looney, Damien Jones and Pat McCaw make roughly $3 million total, which equals $36 million. Outside of these 5 as well as Curry+Durant, they need 5 more players to reach 12, so there is a league minimum cap hold of 500k per player equaling $2.5 million. So that equals $38.5 million. I *assume* Seth Curry's cap hold was at $50 million (if not, then any player who is eligible for a super max, should have that as a hold, not the 120% of their salary or 150% it is for lesser players). If all that is correct, that leave $12 million for Durant, because Golden State does not have his bird rights?

And they already resigned Shaun Livingston and play to go after Rudy Gay, if Igoudala leaves...

Its a soft cap where you can offer more than the max and exceed the cap for your own-drafted talent.

I get that, but they do not have Durant's bird rights, so I'm trying to figure out how they can offer him more that $12 million.

You get partial rights after two years and full rights after 3

These salary's are way out of control. And the ONLY way a team can pump out so much coin is because of us fans. No one is worth that much money, NO ONE. If we could only figure out a way to increase our soldiers salaries then it would be deserved. After all, they risk their lives every day. This player doesn't deserve this much money nor does any other professional player. The only thing they risk is a bent pinky.

The Dubs are set to pay $40M in luxury tax. The way the system is set up, that's just the price of doing business.

Fwiw, one simple way around the situation the nba has found it self in, is teams have to decide how much of a cap hold they will need to resign their free agents. If the Warriors were forced to actually use a $50 million dollar cap hold on Curry, they wouldn't actually be able to afford Durant, Igoudala or Livingston. But because he made $12 million last year, his hold was only $18 million

200 million bucks for a freak to run around in his underwear!! Basketball sucks, and anybody that would pay these long freaks money to play this joke of a so called sport, suck even more. Curry is worth about 50 bucks a game...if you want to pretent Basketball is a real game.

Now shorts are underwear. Love basketball, football, baseball haven't followed regularly since the late 80s when Dodgers last won a championship. Game is too slow for me to watch.

I am only baiting basketball fans. I used to enjoy, years ago, the old Celtic clubs...with Bird..Ainge and Parrish.

The players make this much money because there's this much money in the sport. Either the players get it or the owners keep it (and the owners are already keeping plenty of it). If you want the players (and owners) to make less and soldiers (and teachers, cops, etc.) to make more, there's one way to do that, and it's very simple: raise taxes.

You're worth what somebody is willing to pay you. And owners are willing to pay them because people are willing to pay to see them. As much respect I have for our soldiers, they do not represent a skill set of the top 1% of people in the world in their field. So worth is relative. You can say pay military more money, but you don't have to because there are more people who have the ability to do that job at that level. It's the same argument against paying teachers more money. You have to stop equating their annual salary with their importance rather than equating their annual salary with their Elite skill sets. No one is paying a high school teacher $100,000 when there is an equally qualified teacher who can do the exact same job for half of that.

These greedy players will be the demise of a team that could have otherwise been a dynasty like the Lakers and Celtics have been in years gone by.

Warriors won 2 of the past 3 championships and don't look to be slowing down any time soon. You're acting like it's Melo when he went to the Knicks.
