Good for you, Trouty.

I put both my daughter and son in jiu jitsu classes beginning in elementary school. While it was more of a game for them at that age, they learned a bit of discipline and focus.

Got called to the school one day. My daughter taught the class bully she was not to be messed with. When I asked my son what he was doing during the fight, he said "... I made sure he didn't run before sis was finished with him".

If you have the money for it, get him some jiu-jitsu AND kickboxing lessons. Jiu-jitsu is far more valuable, but it never hurts to learn how to strike.

They are also competitive and can give your son some opportunities to practice in a real world situation which IMO is critical

Hey Marine, you being 0311, I appreciate your input (not that I don’t adore all the others).

I’m teaching him pure take downs. He’s so damn slow on his feet, Darth

Question does he have a cousin his age ( preferrable slightly older) or a friend whose parents will allow you to instruct their child?

He has a close circle of friends, and we are all close as he’s been classmates with them since his K years. I think they (his friends parents) think I’m a nut (they love me, but just a hunch), so I doubt they’d let me teach their kids. I do chaperone trips and such, but this is a bit different.

He has many cousins. Many.

Try to get see if you can one of his cousins cleared as a sparing partner. Do your best to create a live, competitive exercise so if he ever has to do it for real he isnt thinking about how to do it

Judo is a great sport for kids. There's 3-4 core throws/trips that can quickly end a confrontation from a bully. At the kids level, they teach pins, like wrestling, that will allow them to dissolve the situation without ever throwing a punch.

Got to put in my vote for grappling.
Being a taller, lankier guys one of the things I always tried to avoid was being taken to the ground by someone smaller, with a low center of gravity that knew how to wrestle.

Also put in another vote for Martial Arts. There used to be a Korean instructor who came to Marine Barracks @ NAS North Island every morning to train us. Never being flexible it was at times grueling and a great workout and confidence builder. It was amazing to watch a guy that was 5,4 and 120 lbs take down a 6,2 225 lb GySgt with ease.

I'm a big proponent of teaching your kid how to defend themselves; especially with something effective like Judo or BJJ.

It's good for the body and mind.

I wanted to pull my Ruger .38 on the kid’s fathers in front of the kids.

I wanted to tell the kids that if they loved their daddy’s, know that this kid you’re messing with (my son), has a psycho dad who was wounded at war and doesn’t give a shyte :D

My son’s mom accosted me. :)
