Sometimes, the best trades are the ones you don't make

Cowboys were thwarted twice in bid to draft quarterbacks, but finally got one

In the fourth round on Saturday, the Oakland Raiders traded one spot ahead of Dallas to take Michigan State quarterback Connor Cook. "I was pretty surprised," Cook told reporters by conference call. "I think Dallas was interested and they were trying to trade up."

In the draft, beyond round 1, the element of luck plays a huge part. We dodged multiple QB bombs in that 2016 draft.

But with free agency, you're vying for the services of guys who have an established performance record.

There's a difference between "not overpaying" and being cheap. The Cowboys are the latter.

They're not going to win super bowls building a team EXCLUSIVELY through the draft. They're going to have to eventually be more aggressive with free agency and trades.

Can you imagine the shape we would be in right now if they had made that move?

(Shudders)

The shape of a very large "L" would be on their ball caps. Of course, it might still appear after the next 6 weeks shellacking.

Connor Cook was actually on Dallas' radar and we would have picked him if the Raiders didn't jump in front of us to pick him..

That being said, if we didn't have Dak, we'd probably have had a season minimum with Romo and Zeke...

Especially if ole Jerry boy is making them. In the past, the Cowboys have made some astounding deals. Anyway, outside of stealing players via a one sided deal (Walker) The road to the SB goes through the draft. There are no shortcuts to greatness.

I guess Brice butler trade worked out. About the only one I can think of in the last 20 years.

So funny. Free agency and trades are bad!! Just because they suck at both doesn’t mean they’re bad. Get better at it. We are building a team with 1/3 of the available tools to build one.
If it is done right, a trade deal or a strategic FA at the right time can be a winner and in a big way. Haley and Sanders proved that. Just can not build the foundation of a club that way.
