Especially if ole Jerry boy is making them. In the past, the Cowboys have made some astounding deals. Anyway, outside of stealing players via a one sided deal (Walker) The road to the SB goes through the draft. There are no shortcuts to greatness.
Hell yeah..Haley was a great trade. Better than great...a SB winning deal. And picking up Charles Hailey.
If it is done right, a trade deal or a strategic FA at the right time can be a winner and in a big way. Haley and Sanders proved that. Just can not build the foundation of a club that way.
If Garrett was to catch the bubonic plague...that could be construed as a good deal....Bingo.
And what people were suggesting this team do in the offseason wasn't with the intent of building the core. It was to add to the existing core.
And yet people act as if using FA that way is like getting bubonic plague.
In the draft, beyond round 1, the element of luck plays a huge part. We dodged multiple QB bombs in that 2016 draft.
But with free agency, you're vying for the services of guys who have an established performance record.
There's a difference between "not overpaying" and being cheap. The Cowboys are the latter.
They're not going to win super bowls building a team EXCLUSIVELY through the draft. They're going to have to eventually be more aggressive with free agency and trades.
No it makes senseSometimes replies to threads make sense to no one, except for the guy who posted it.
Speaking of trades, the Cowboys have been attempting to trade for a bell cow RB before today's trade deadline. Looks like we might well be doing what we can with what we've got -- not that it's such bad news or anything.

You don't build a superbowl worthy team ONLY through the draft. You build the core of your team, in which you pepper free agents here and there to supplement what you don't have. Where did the front office get this 'only the draft', nonsense from? The patriots? The same Patriots who signed Darrelle Revis who was instrumental in them winning a superbowl? Martellus Bennett, who also is a superbowl winner? The Denver Broncos who added Demarcus Ware and also won a superbowl? Our FO wasted money on guys who aren't even on the team anymore.

Remember this one?
Jerry Jones regrets not overpaying to get Paxton Lynch
Obviously, the article was written during that draft. But if that deal happens, Dak isn't a Cowboy. Lynch hasn't been able to beat out Trevor Siemian. Thank you, John Elway.
Can you imagine the shape we would be in right now if they had made that move?

Great post. Somehow people here have bought into a narrative that all free agents/trades are bad. Pure foolishness.
