Sometimes, the best trades are the ones you don't make

Speaking of trades, the Cowboys have been attempting to trade for a bell cow RB before today's trade deadline. Looks like we might well be doing what we can with what we've got -- not that it's such bad news or anything.

Especially if ole Jerry boy is making them. In the past, the Cowboys have made some astounding deals. Anyway, outside of stealing players via a one sided deal (Walker) The road to the SB goes through the draft. There are no shortcuts to greatness.

And picking up Charles Hailey.

If it is done right, a trade deal or a strategic FA at the right time can be a winner and in a big way. Haley and Sanders proved that. Just can not build the foundation of a club that way.

Bingo.

And what people were suggesting this team do in the offseason wasn't with the intent of building the core. It was to add to the existing core.

And yet people act as if using FA that way is like getting bubonic plague.

In the draft, beyond round 1, the element of luck plays a huge part. We dodged multiple QB bombs in that 2016 draft.

But with free agency, you're vying for the services of guys who have an established performance record.

There's a difference between "not overpaying" and being cheap. The Cowboys are the latter.

They're not going to win super bowls building a team EXCLUSIVELY through the draft. They're going to have to eventually be more aggressive with free agency and trades.

Great post

Too bad AD went to Arizona. He would of been great here.

Great post. Somehow people here have bought into a narrative that all free agents/trades are bad. Pure foolishness.

You don't build a superbowl worthy team ONLY through the draft. You build the core of your team, in which you pepper free agents here and there to supplement what you don't have. Where did the front office get this 'only the draft', nonsense from? The patriots? The same Patriots who signed Darrelle Revis who was instrumental in them winning a superbowl? Martellus Bennett, who also is a superbowl winner? The Denver Broncos who added Demarcus Ware and also won a superbowl? Our FO wasted money on guys who aren't even on the team anymore.

Because they're scared to give real money to real players anymore. They paid Thornton a decent amount to come here, but he sucked before he ever even joined the team.

The FO needs to bite the bullet and get some proven and talented vets at positions of need. All this diamond in the rough crap isn't working

No it makes sense

Oh really? I was talking about the attempts to get Lynch and Cook that failed.

His reply talked about excuses.

Excuses for what?

Explain the connection.

Can you imagine the shape we would be in right now if they had made that move?

(Shudders)

Yah but we would have gotten top 5 picks last year and this year and possibly a new head coach. Silver lining? LOL

Which people? I don't know anyone who has said that.

You seem to be attaching that narrative to people, then responding as though they've said it. Pure foolishness.

oh stop it , we dont know waht happens, players play different with each team. We might have made Lynch into a better QB, and lets be honest, while we are striking good with Dak, i do credit that the cowboys gave him a lift. ok lets not panic that every player that sucks on one team would only suck here.

I actually love the excitement of trades, but Jerry wants to build this team exclusively thru the draft and really values his draft picks all of a sudden, so...

Some people ITT like to hyperbolize the position of others in an attempt to mock them.

Nobody thinks FA is the plague and no one thinks all big free agent acquisitions/trades are bad.

That being said, I love all the trading going on. I hope this is the new norm.
