NFL Recommends Coaching Candidates

Each year, the NFL’s Career Development Advisory Panel releases a list of candidates for head coaching jobs. According to Mike Lombardi of The Ringer (Twitter link), that list includes:

• Dan Campbell (Assistant Head Coach/TE coach, Saints)
• Jim Bob Cooter (Offensive Coordinator, Lions)
• John DeFilippo (Quarterbacks Coach, Eagles)
• George Edwards (Defensive Coordinator, Vikings)
• Josh McDaniels (Offensive Coordinator, Patriots)
• Matt Nagy (Offensive Coordinator, Chiefs)
• Matt Patricia (Defensive Coordinator, Patriots)
• Jim Schwartz (Defensive Coordinator, Eagles)
• Pat Shurmur (Offensive Coordinator, Vikings)
• Dave Toub (Special Teams Coach, Chiefs)
• Steve Wilks (Defensive Coordinator, Panthers)
• Mike Vrabel (Defensive Coordinator, Texans)

McDaniels, of course, comes with previous head coaching experience. He was probably too young to handle those

Ten white guys, two black guys. Prediction: Edwards and Wilks get lots of interviews this offseason for jobs that eventually go to stale retreads.

On the other hand, Hue Jackson and Marvin Lewis may join the ranks of stale retreads, which may reduce the number of token interviews given by badly managed teams who are dead-set on hiring yesterday's news.

Why does the NFL even do this? That is, publishing this list?

Teams searching for coaches know perfectly well who the hot up and comers are.

Does the NFL give a team a gold star if they hire one of these 10 guys?

This is silly. If im most of the teams searching for a new HC, go try something new. fans are tired of seeing the same ol, It wont always work, but hey if you need a new HC what you have been trying hasnt been working either.

From that list............... I am keeping my eye on DeFilippo and Nagy for sure.

With the franchise banking on Prescott, I think if Garrett were replaced this or next offseason, I want an offensive mind in here, preferably a guy with good QB coaching background............ Nagy and DeFilippo.

I've heard that Hue is going no where, and that Dorsey is committed to acquiring "real talent" (his words) for Hue.

That's the thing. They're all interchangeable

Impossible to say. How would you know Patricia wouldn't be better than Garrett? How many would have said McVay would definitely do a better job than Garrett? I suspect, not many here.

That's the risk you take when hiring a new head coach. But at some point, a franchise has to take that risk. For some, we aren't there yet. For me, it's time to take that risk and go in another direction. What's the worst that can happen? We not make the playoffs? We've made it twice in Garrett's 7 years. So it's not like we'd be missing anything we haven't already missed.

There are no sure things in hiring a coach unless you hire one of the very few that are guaranteed successes - and few, if any, of those guys are leaving their current jobs.

His defense hasn't been good the last two weeks, but before that, from around week 4-week 12, they were #1 in scoring defense, with a rag tag group. Probably the worst D that NE has fielded since BB. Patricia is a stud D Coord. And he was taught by a savant. BB uses so many damn formations that Patricia has had to have learned an immense amount.

Granted, BB's coaching tree leaves a lot to be desired, but I would take a flier on Patricia (over JG) yesterday.
