Detroit Lions fire Jim Caldwell after missing playoffs

Jim Caldwell's tenure with the Detroit Lions is over.

The team announced early Monday morning that general manager Bob Quinn informed Caldwell that he will not be returning as head coach.

The news doesn't come as a surprise after the Lions lost hope for the playoffs by laying an egg in Cincinnati in Week 16.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport previously reported that Caldwell's contract extension signed earlier in 2017 was for one year with options down the road, simply avoiding a lame-duck year. The contract nuance allowed the Lions to walk away from Caldwell after the season with minimal penalty.

The Lions ended 9-7 in 2017 after a 3-1 start to the year. Caldwell will finish his four-year run in Detroit with a 36-28 record. He is the first Lions head coach with a winning record since Joe Schmidt in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Detroit made the playoffs twice and finished with a losing record just once under Caldwell.

the raiders fired del rio and colts fired pagano and bears fired fox

Seems like this is where some people are speculating Patricia or McDaniels to go because of the patriots multiple connections in the front office.

They have a good defensive coordinator so if Patricia goes here I bet Austin goes back to Baltimore to run the defense.

This seems like a bad fit for Patricia to me.

Huge rumor going right now. Gruden and P.Manning headed to Colts as hc and gm. Apparently those two and colts owner were on a plane last offseason discussing this. I'd take that duo in a heartbeat.

Just like when they betrayed Wayne Fontes and stabbed him in the back.

Fontes wasn't a good coach. Losing record and only 1 playoff win after 9 seasons. His strength was supposed to be defense, but his teams were consistently in the bottom 3rd of the league in yards and points allowed.

His players loved him and he got Detroit to the NFC Championship game, more than they had ever done before or since

That was in the 91 season. He had 5 years after that and produced a losing record over that time. The Lions gave him plenty of time and he wasn't good enough.

NE coaches should stay put.
They are not quite ready to be a HC yet.
Plus better chance at rings
There.
Keep learning from BB.

how many years of winning as an assistant is needed? Mcdaniels and patricia have more than anyone available I would imagine.

I dont understand in any way how they could not be ready especially in a league where Sean Mcvay took the rams to the playoffs.
