The 2017 NFL season viewership numbers are in, down 10% from 2016 numbers. This is on top on a 9% decrease in 2016.

For some reason, this topic triggers a few around these parts. However, it is an interesting and a gaining momentum paradigm shift so either deal with, shield yourself and stay away or continue to be enraged.

For the rest, look forward to the interesting dialog..........

Viewership for NFL broadcasts during the regular season dipped once again in 2017 --- and by a larger percentage than last year.

The average audience across the NFL's broadcast partners --- CBS, Fox, NBC, ESPN and NFL Network --- dropped 10%, according to data provided to USA TODAY Sports. While 33 of the top 50 TV programs since Week 1 in September were NFL games, this season's decline follows an 8% decline in 2016.

NFL broadcasts had an average minute audience of 14.9 million compared to 16.5 million in 2016.

CBS, Fox, NBC and ESPN had a smaller audience than 2016.

ESPN, which included its streaming audience, had the lowest drop among the four networks at a 7.7% decline. Fox had a 9.1% drop, NBC dipped 10.4% and CBS fell 11.2% compared to 2016.

Ratings are estimates so it could be that even more people have quit watching the NFL than what the ratings say.

and it is also possible that more people are watching, you don't really know.
all I can say is that the people Nielsen monitor have dropped out a little bit by small percentage .
with the protests, the Pink Shoes ,the sidelines girls, the overall poor product ,the dirty laundry, the suspensions and other things it is a less enjoyable product than what it used to be.
plus there are no really great teams just a few that are a little better than the others.
it's kind of like they're all bad.

what we see in the Super Bowl and playoffs are the best of the bad.

the NFL defenders claim this is all cord cutting but that is ringing less and less true as also merchandising revenue fell as did attendance.
How many actually WATCH a game on a monitor or something even smaller? REALLY. Now you can more easily work it to ignore the commercials which I can see but still on such a small screen? So to me that means that advertising revenue will fall no matter what and THAT is where the NFL gets the big money. So the next TV contracts are not going to be huge increases which means more than likely a stagnant cap starting in 2022.

The quality of play is way down from the 90s, and the rules are ridiculous. Young QBs are just atrocious, and the spread offenses are painful to watch. Plus, nobody practices anymore, so the tackling is terrible, too.

The PC police got hold of the NFL. It's doomed.

standard rate of decline for multiple years now.

What happened to the 50%+ of fans that claimed they were snowflakes and gonna quit watching? lolz

NFL is down 20%
NBA is up 10%

Cord cutters aren't watching either and networks don't care why they aren't watching....they just aren't

NFL is still top dog but that isn't saying much............ 20% losses can't be spun as good news

Has anyone any viewing figures for gamepass?

This has been the worst season in memory for me and it has nothing to do with the Cowboys struggling. They have struggled for the better part of two decades and no season has been less interesting than this one.

Agreed.

Too much upper NFL offices bad management.

A Panthers versus Jaguars Super Bowl would be the nail in the NFL's coffin. I have family overseas, and the only game they ever watch is the Super Bowl each year. I remember them calling one year when two teams they didn't recognize were in it. They wanted to know where the Cowboys, Niners, Packers, and Steelers were. They proceeded to turn off the TV and not watch.

Arrogant commissioner and too many arrogant owners. For all of Jerry’s faults…he’s rightfully concerned about this. Too many of the other owners have that ‘we’re the only horse in town’ mentality. I think that’s a terrible business mentality as the working class has less PTO than ever in the past 50 years and now there’s more alternatives when it comes to sports and entertainment. That means the fiercest competition ever for fan dollars. And the owners and commissioner just bristle at the notion of this being a major issue and would rather make lame excuses that do not make any sense.

they wouldn't matter because its not live.

It is interesting though I took a survey this week on gamepass. It was all about would you buy x if we charged you x.

from what I took from it the league understands they have lost viewers to the Redzone channel and many prefer to watch the league this way. Instead of watching the games from start to finish there is a large audience that just wants to watch the teams about to score or the big situations and that is what redzone is.

it sounds like the nfl is ready to roll out a streaming package that includes, NFL Network, NFL Redzone, NFL Gamepass. Seems they are trying to find the sweet spot price wise where it would make sense.

I let them know 120 is the most I would pay and I understand that has zero chance of happening because they get 100 for gamepass. Having it all in one would be nice for cord cutters like myself though.

I got gamepass for free two years in a row for being a season ticket holder and then that just stopped because the NFL does not care one bit about their customers in any way shape or form.

I bet its available this year and its about 250 or more.

People don't have the money to spend. Cable, tickets, merchandise, concessions all of it. You can basically track the American economy through the lens of how the NFL is affected.

Totally agree erod. I'd love to have the 90s football back. I wish they would indelicately return parity and PC police to a place where the sun never shines, i.e. back where they found it.
While they're at it, maybe send some of those ridiculous rules to the same place as well.

The last few years the NFL just keeps making one mistake after another. No reason to believe that will suddenly stop when they won't wake up and see how the game is slowly going downhill. The loss of more viewership the next couple of years like we've seen the last 2 years could leave the leagues future in considerable risk.
