Several Former Cowboys Moving on to Sunday’s Championship Games
(Jan. 14; 8:35 p.m.) While it’s been more than two decades since the Cowboys participated in the NFC Championship Game, there will definitely be some familiar faces on the field next Sunday when the NFC and AFC title games take place for a spot in Super Bowl LII.

With Minnesota's dramatic last-second win over the Saints, it meant eight former Cowboys coaches and players are moving on, including head coach Mike Zimmer, a longtime Dallas assistant.

The Vikings have four players and four coaches, while the Jaguars have four former players on the roster and a pair of coaches.

I count 3 players that actually played meaningful snaps on our team that will be playing.

Newman
Parnell
Church

I can argue we were not wrong to let go of all 3 of those players.

Several of the former “Cowboys” are players I didn’t know we ever had(a kicker?) and some coaches that were likely position coaches or lower with us that moved up the coaching chain.

Nothing here is an alarming sign for roster mismanagement. We have surely had some
mismanagement but silly to look at this list and use it as evidence. Even the great Patriots let Wes Welker walk and he signed with the Broncos and brought them to the SB...you shouldn’t chase every player that walks out the door. You submit a fair offer but if they want to chase money with a team that has 50 million in room, let them walk.

I wonder how many fans comment without looking at the actual list bashing the front office for letting players in the playoffs walk..

It seems all you have to do is pass through the facility to be recognized as a former cowboy, you got to love it:)

i'm sure that if you were to list all the teams that any of the players / coaches were involved with for the 4 championship teams you would find many many more than just the cowboys 18....while this is intriguing and a good story for guys like newman and church (who were both good cowboys), it is not surprising in the least

Zimmer should have replaced Parcells...

In my opinion it would have been hard for Zimmer to be successful due to the GM in Dallas.

A strong minded coach with great credentials and championships like Parcells can only be successful (no Super Bowls though but it was going to happen if he had stayed longer) in this Cowboys environment.

I always liked Zimmer and wondered why it took so long for him to get a chance as a HC.

Just like with Ware, I'll be happy for Newman or Church if either gets a Super Bowl ring. If we can't do it, I'd prefer for some players who suffered with us for years to get the chance ... unless they play for one of our division rivals, Pittsburgh, New England (just because I'm tired of seeing them win) or San Francisco (can't let The Catch go).

Perhaps this is why so many assistant coaches are jumping ship....
its based on the circumstance. Zimmer was DC in other places and was continuously passed over. he was DC in Cinci as well. He wasn't a top choice coaching candidate the season he got hired. He wasn't Minn. top choice. so he didn't run away. he left after parcells, because wade came in and brought his guys to do 3-4, where zimmer is a pure 4-3 guy.

its amazing how Newmann has been able to stay around. I do remember most on this board wanted him gone. I hated to let Church go. I thought between him and Williams, we let Williams walk and keep church. despite his couple of plays, I think heath is a JAG and would be a good 3rd safety, not a difference making starting safety.

parnell!! woopdee doo....

the other guys were just JAGs. they went to the right team at the right time. none of are difference makes, but roster fillers.

the other coaches, were 4-3 coaches with the cowboys who left after we went to 3-4 for a few years.

it wasn't a fit at the time.

you can also make the same argument for other teams in the league who are not in the conf. championships and their players are there, like Campbell from AZ and Jackson from Denver, etc. its not like this is a cowboys phenomenon.
