Did the coaching staff ruin Chaz Green?

Chaz Green was taken in the 3rd round of the 2015 draft at pick 91 which is a premium pick. I did not like the pick at all. For me it wasn't his lack of talent, the guy had talent, it was he could not stay healthy. From high school through college I believe he missed around 1/3 of his starts with a laundry list of injuries. It wasn't like he had a bad knee, shoulder, etc. He had 10+ injuries all over, foot, groin, shoulder, etc. Once again it seems as if the Cowboys drafted a player with a high grade while ignoring his troubling history of injuries. Sure enough he got hurt in his first training camp and missed a lot of time in his first 2 years dealing with various injuries.

With all that said, in 2016 when Tyron missed those 2 games Green came in and did a pretty good job IMO. No one is Tyron but I didn't hold my breath on every snap. Green showed ability and even though he was made of glass at least he was an adequate reserve/swing tackle if healthy.

Fast forward to training camp in 2017 and the Cowboys are trying to figure out how to replace Leary at LG. The coaching staff made an awful decision IMO to try to put Green in at LG. A position that he had never played at any level. Everyone knows the difference in mechanics, technique, etc. is night and day compared to playing tackle. It takes a lot of reps and practice to even attempt the switch unless you are just a superior talent both physically and mentally. So what happens? Sure enough Green gets hurt and Cooper is given the job. So now what do the Cowboys do? They decide that Green despite trying to learn a new position and not getting any reps at tackle, will have no problem re-adjusting to playing LT on the fly if Tryon is hurt. We all know what happened at Atlanta.

I am not absolving Green of what happened at Atlanta. That was all time bad. But I just find it hard to believe that a guy who was a pretty serviceable backup tackle was/is now suddenly Rob Petitti bad. Since he is still under his rookie contract and has never played another snap since what is the plan for this guy? Is he just going to dress out but never play and take up a valuable spot on the 45 man game day roster? I'm not sticking up for this guy as far as thinking he is anything special, but I also think that this coaching staff ruined any chance this guy had to contribute on a team that has no depth, by trying to convert him to guard so they could get the "best 5 guys" on the field.

I don't think the staff ruined Green at all. His lack of staying healthy and getting game time experience is what hurt Green. The staff did well with guys like Tyron, Leary, Martin, La'el and Freddy, they stayed on the field and got the needed experience to improve.

A lack of talent to play at the pro level ruined Green. His performance in ATL was an embarrassment for himself and his coaching from OL to OC to HC. He should have been released the Monday after....right after the HC and OC for poor prep and planning for the 2nd most important position on the offense.

Most coaches will define their job as putting their players in their best position to succeed. By leaving Green out on an island for 3 quarters, they screwed their entire team and deserved to be fired.

The demise of Chaz Green was puzzling. Like the OP, I thought green was serviceable until Atlanta happened. That was the most destruction Georgia has seen since Sherman toured the state.
I have no idea what the plan for him is now. That will be up to our new ol coach.
Seems like durability will always be an issue however

No...I don't think so. I think he just didn't pan out. He wasn't great coming out of Florida, although the potential was there. Injuries kept him from working on his craft day in and day out in college and in Dallas.

No Green was barely serviceable when he was playing at his best..he got his confidence shook when he , yes he failed to play well at LG and moved back to swing tackle..than we he got his chance he failed miserably..so he was barely playing well enough to be a backup and than fell off a cliff.. I'm not sure id have him on this team, Bell wasn't much better , its apparent draft or FA we need a good swing tackle as a priority..Id say Speedy Big Dlinemen for NT,WR, backup swing tackle, in whatever order..i believe they know they cant have that repeat given both TS and LC both have helath issues, so that backup swing tackle is amAJOR NEED..

no way coaching ruined him, they didn't do him any favors moving him back and forth and NOT pulling him but they nearly Ruined dak leaving this guy in that ATL game for sure..

Like I have been saying, this staff does not develop players. We pick player who have overwhelming talent in the first round. Beyond that its a crap shoot. Tyron, Travis, and Zack all first rounders with above talent. Zack they lucked into being so good. When can we say that we developed a raw talent offensive line player to become an above or pro bowl player? The last I recall was during Jimmy's Johnson coaching days. We dont develop players. Nobody gets better on the Cowboys unless they leave and change schemes and then you see how really good they become.

I don't know what happened to Green. He was always a guy with skills whose problem was with staying healthy. And he did play well in short relief last season.

I don't think moving him from LG to LT was the problem last year. He looked bad at LG, too. He was terrible at LT, but he had from the Rams game in week 4 until the Falcons game in, what, week 9 or 10 to transition back to his old position. Including a bye week in there. He just sucked for another reason.

I suspect he went in the tank after losing the LG job somehow. Either way, he's not even worth reclaiming now in my book, because you just can't ever count on him again. Which stinks, because he had pretty much all you were looking for in a swing OT going into the season.

Meh.

I do think Pollack probably got some deserving blame for that one. As he should have.

Well, they also screwed up the LG call, which they should have gotten right coming out of camp.

Pollack was never an adequate replacement for Callahan. We managed to coast for a bit there, but the guy didn't have the experience to run the position group we'd invested those kinds of premium resources on. I was actually surprised CIN hired him so quickly, given the other OL coaches who became available.

seriously Leary and Parnell got big contracts and left, they developed them and Doug free wasn't so bad either..LC wasn't a first rounder although he had first round talent but technically we put him a guard and than developed him into a RT

apparently you like to rip the boys just to see yourself type and be negative. we lose some talent because we cant afford to keep them once they get good, can only allocate a portion of money to one unit..so we had to lose Leary and Parnell because of the cap and Free to retirement..

I wouldn't say that Green is "ruined". I'd say instead that they wasted him this year, and ******** his development.

We tried to turn an adequate swing tackle (not something that grows on trees) into a starting guard, and ended up with neither. Snafu. Another glaring coaching failure for the offense.

I'd keep him at swing tackle this offseason. We need to test him out, but I think he'll be fine if we let him stick at it.

Perhaps having him practice/play mostly at guard throughout training camp, and preseason, had a negative impact in his development at the tackle position.

^^^ If my memory is accurate.
