We won't be players in FA again in my opinion

anyone making 7-8 figures yearly would want the majority of their money up front. why you ask??????????????????? so they can invest it and make even more from it. I would rather invest 1 million in the stock market today than 100k yearly over the next ten years. so would anyone who truly understands money. martin doesn't have to worry about just having a 401k and a checking account.

Plus it absolutely kills the cap
the players really care about themselves more than the cap for the team in general. it's just the nature of the beast. it's always about the money. can't blame them.

It doesn't change the fact that no player getting a big, long term deal is going to get 80% of his money up front. It just doesn't happen and won't happen for Martin.

We can talk all we want about what they may want and then use that to make arguments about the cap like some have, but in the end, Zach Martin isn't getting a contract where he would sign say a $75MM contract and within the first two three seasons, collect $60MM of that money. It just doesn't happen.

probably not. teams try to limit guaranteed money to 50%. but if it gets to be a bidding war, anything can happen. look what philly offered DeMarco murray as opposed to our offer. teams sign free agents to hopefully upgrade their talent, and also to hurt the team from which they took the player. what if the giants or skins or eagles have an opportunity to pursue zack. I would expect resigning him will be problematic at the least.

It likely will never get to that point. The Cowboys will probably resign him.

Even in Murray's case, he didn't get some bizarrely outrageous contract offer. The Cowboys just didn't offer him a lot because they were afraid he'd break down and they believed RBs get injured more often. None of that applies to Martin.

If it were to get to a bidding war for Martin, he still wouldn't get an $80MM contract where someone pays him $65MM of that within 3 years.

I would hope we can resign him, but there are no guarantees. at some point you have to put your offer in front of his agent and see whether or not he will accept it. if not, then trade for players or draft picks. but in no case do you just let him leave. either way, he has value to the cowboys. we screwed the pooch with murray and just let him walk. we just need to deal with the situation like the patriots do. last year belichik refused offers for garoppolo that included first rounders. this year they traded him for a 2nd round pick. that surely wasn't bill's thought processes, but the front office and their love of brady. treat it like business.

I disagree we screwed the pooch on Murray. I wouldn't have paid him that money either.

agree on the money part. but we could have worked out a trade with someone. the year prior, he rejected a cowboys offer that would have made him the highest paid fa running back in the nfl. that should have been a clue. pats wouldn't have let him walk for nothing in return.

Murray being unable to stay on the field says the Cowboys made the right decision. They would still only be heading into year 3 on a deal that no doubt would've put this team in a hole. Not sure how having a better, younger RB with a bright future on a rookie deal is screwing the pooch? Murray will be 30 in a few weeks and that 2014 season is a distant memory.

So wait............ you would have traded him in 2013?

Also, I don't think you would have gotten much for him anyway if you did try to trade him in 2013. It was 2014's season that made people think Murray was a top shelf TB.

Did you miss the part where PHI traded both Murray and BMaxwell after one year

These imagined risks of long term deals are easily rectified ....... and the cap keeps going up

Murray was under contract with Philly and they swapped 4th round picks. The Cowboys would've had to make a trade before his big year because no one was biting in the final year of his contract. Swapping 4ths is great and all, and I agree that the Cowboys sometimes squander opportunities to get something in return for players, but the opportunity really wasn't there for a deal with DM.

You said DAL would be in Year 3 of the Murray deal......PHI traded him after one year

There are no deals you can't get out of........even the Romo deal

the bottom line, regarding murray, is he left and we got nothing for him. that's what I mean by screwing the pooch. I doubt even you knew we'd draft zeke with the 4th pick in 2016. or tony would be injured in 2015. Nostradamus got it wrong more often than not.

not sure where you got the trade him in 2013 info from. certainly not from me. after the 2014 season would have been the time to try and get some value for him. he made it clear he wanted big money and we just didn't have it. it was murray or dez. seems we struck out on both.

Took awhile but I've finally learned it's a young man's game esp at RB.

Just saw our draft picks this year 3-4th's and 3-5th's. No way we do anything in FA IMO. Expect more bottom feeding.

We'd be foolish to draft that many players. Better to use them to trade up and get fewer but higher quality players.

I expect us to be active in the draft and to get at least one key player in free agency.

So, franchise Murray to trade him?
How can you trade a guy who has a contract that just ran out?
What team would give up a draft pick when they knew he was going to be an UFA in March?

Hitch has finally blossomed into a quality MLB. He was fantastic this season. These are the types of guys you pay IMO. He's finally gotten good and we're going to let him get away? I hope not.

We lose him and we have another hole to fill. Wilson and Wilbur are awful.
Like Lee, you notice when he's not in there.
