Philadelphia's Success Puts Spotlight on Jason Garrett

By Jean-Jacques Taylor
Published 2 hours ago

In his second year as head coach, Doug Pederson helped guide the Philadelphia Eagles to the Super Bowl. NBC 5 sports director Newy Scruggs and Cowboys Insider Jean-Jacques Taylor discuss the difference between Pederson and Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett. (Published Monday, Jan. 22, 2018)

Whether he chooses to admit it publicly - or even acknowledge it - Jerry Jones must wonder how in the world the Philadelphia Eagles wound up in the Super Bowl, while his team missed the playoffs.

The Eagles lost several key starters to injuries this season, including quarterback Carson Wentz, who was playing at a MVP level, when he tore a knee ligament against the Los Angeles Rams in December.

They also lost Pro Bowl left tackle Jason Peters, starting middle linebacker Jordan Hicks, running back Darren Sproles and special teams captain Chris Maragos among others.

None of it affected them.

Philadelphia coach Doug Pederson figured out how to make it work. He adjusted. He adapted.

And he refused to let his team find ways to lose, when no one would've blamed them if they did.

I noticed he doesn’t mention the lack of depth the Cowboys have which has nothing to do with JG. He doesn’t mention they have a GM that goes out and makes great FA pick ups. He doesn’t mention that Jerry and Co let an entire veteran secondary walk. He doesn’t mention that the Eagles have a pretty quality veteran qb as a back up, not Brandon Weeden. The list goes on and on.

JG definitely deserves some blame but Jerry and Co deserve the most IMO. The one constant over the past 20+ years of mediocrity and misery has been Jerry Jones.

Wait........... many of the JG supporters have said he's been vital in rebuilding the roster from what he inherited.

It's funny how this works. After the 2016 season, you guys wanted JG to get credit for his role in building the roster. 2017 happens and wait, JG has no control over the roster at all so you can't blame depth problems on him.

Pederson is a protege of Andy Reid

Garrett is a protege of Nick Saban and Jerry Jones

Experience from an NFL successful coach is huge

I agree that the constant throughout all of this has been Jerry but Garrett is stubborn in his ways and needs to understand his way doesn't always work. That's why you have assistant coaches to help out.

Perhaps Jerry Jones should be looking for something other than the fact his head coach is "comfortable with ambiguity".

How about "emotional intelligence"?

“There’s a lot of great coaches. They all have their different styles, but the one common ground amongst them all is absolute consistency and genuineness. And Doug Pederson is just himself. And at times, that’s very humble, and at times, it’s just very real. At times, that’s very bright. At times, it’s tough. But he does it in a true genuine way and I think players really respond to that in today’s world.”

Look, I will never defend Jason Garrett after his gutless approach to the 2016 season. He should be fired immediately.

Having said that, once again, you can never ever compare him to another coach in the league. Pederson doesn't have a lunatic owner and his chubby son running roughshod over the front office and locker room. He's not neutered.

So if Jerry wants to wonder how this happened he can start by looking at himself.

"Nothing to do with JG"? Seriously?

You mean that the head coach of the team has no voice and no say in who's here and who's not? Please. Let's not be naive. Jerry Jones isn't forcing the Chaz Greens and Byron Bells of the world on poor Jason Garrett.

No, no. Garrett's fans have moved on to the next big thing.

It is now about getting him the all-star defense and coordinator. But Rod Marinelli is still good enough. I know, it is just so confusing.

I guess that is the new thing.

Garrett would be good enough were it not for that darn defense.

Last I checked, his job title says head coach. And that includes all of it - offense, defense, and special teams.

Sorry, there's nowhere else to hide this guy from his rightful blame.

He might be "Ivy-league genius", but he's football stupid.

Without that defense, Pederson’s season ends in a home loss to Atlanta.

Exactly.

And the Philly D held Minne to 7pts, a number which they matched themselves. In fact, Philly’s first three TDS came after two excellent-field-position takeaways and a pick-6.

Garrett's problem is that he cannot overcome that because he thinks and acts like an employee who is "comfortable with ambiguity".

He buys into the organizational direction pretty consistently. He plays it safe and sound, the best he can. He survives as his robotic brain directs him to.
