I've been a member here for quite a while now. Since 2011 if I'm not mistaken.
I have never given a post a like because I associate likes with Facebook. I've been the beneficiary of many likes and I need to start returning the love.
What factors do you look for when you like a post?

whether or not i like it. :)

there are plugins i wish reality would add that show things like:

thank you | agree | funny | funny and agree | winner | informative

and likely other reactions that many people have or would like to "show" on a post other than just "like".

"like"
:laugh::dance:

Seriously though, everyone seems to have different reasons.
I'd think the most common ones could be any or all of the following:
--you agree strongly with the post
--the post was really funny
--you consider the content of the post to have value
etc

I've noticed that some people seem to hit the like button to signify that they read the post, which is fine. There's no need to complain about somebody liking stuff.
Personally, I use likes when I strongly agree with a post, or find it humorous. Sometimes, I "like" a post, rather than post "LOL" in response.

I will LIKE a post for various reasons.

I will click the button if a post makes me chuckle or laugh.

Sometimes if a comment feels that it was created from genuine fan enthusiasm, I will LIKE it.

Thoughtful, original, non-repetitive posts often receive a LIKE from me--regardless whether I agree or disagree with the content necessarily.

Posts honoring the franchise's past, present and future OR posts supporting another member's devotion to the franchise garner LIKEs from me.

Symbolic posts honoring major holidays and events get LIKEs.

The lists goes on. I guess those are the ones that motivate me the most.

Likes are like dog treats. I like stuff I want to see more of. So, funny, constructive, informative, thoughtful, something that hasn’t occurred to me, somebody exchanging thoughts on something I said.

I try really hard to not look at a posters handle until after deciding to like or not like a post. Sometimes that’s easier said than done, though.

We used to have to do this on the other site, because we had a finite allotment of "likes", and even the mods didn't know how many we were allowed in any particular time frame. It seemed completely arbitrary, as one day you'd have what seemed like 30, then two days later you'd run out after the fifth one.
I'd like some kinda way to acknowledge that I read a post. I'm the guy that responds OK to a text, just so that they know I read it.

Lmao,,,,,this might not work for you Jed,,, but when in doubt ,I quickly scan the posters user handle for the first
Letter (or nearest one) to the four points of the compass, then I glance at the 4 shrunken human heads I have suspend from the ceiling in the 4 corresponding points of direction,,,for instance, Jed,
You are of the northern shrunken head & since it's currently facing away from me,,,,you don't get one,,,,o_O
