Offensive draft rankings: Great year for linemen, WR group shaky

It’s draft season in the NFL, and even though the NFL Combine is yet to come, rankings of players are already coming out. While there are frequently very different opinions among them, it is always interesting to see what they may tell us about the talent available for the Dallas Cowboys. Our Dave Halprin has already taken a look at a top five by position ranking from well-known draft guru Mike Mayock. On the same day, Rotoworld put up an offense only breakdown, going ten deep instead. While the author, Thor Nystrom, is much less famous than Mayock, his lists have some interesting things of note for Dallas.

The Cowboys are not equally interested in all positions, but they have needs at several spots. Here, in rough order of priority (from my point of view), are the takeaways.

Offensive guard

The Cowboys have a big need with Jonathan Cooper going into free agency and the team needing an upgrade over him anyway. And this is simply a great class to find a new, long-term starter that would fit right in with the talent already on board.

don't have a big need to upgrade over Cooper. If he can be had for a reasonable price go for it. We need a swing tackle. Honestly that is all.

I'm 50/50 on your comment but I have moved closer to a top guard in this draft.
Cooper did settle in toward the end of the season but there were still some pressure
coming from his area.
We do need upgrade the back ups at both tackle and guard
the interior OL in this draft is solid we'll draft two I bet

I would be happy with an offensive tackle and guard with the first two picks in the draft. Possibly a trade down that nets an additional 2nd round pick.

Then going WR and defense the rest of the way...

the idea that Jimmy was some kind of genius in the draft is of course exaggerated greatly. He just had so many picks it looked that way; his actual hit rate was only somewhat above the league average. And he made some real bad picks. Getting Emmitt was strictly luck.

I am in favor of using all our picks for players not trading up; maybe even trading down a little for more picks. That way if only 40% of them pan out we will get half a dozen good players which would be a HUGE thing.

Cooper is out for 5 months after knee surgery. He'll be back before training camp but it still affects his preparation and he's not exactly been the most durable guy over his career. I'm not overly keen to bring him back

wrong about cooper. It was relatively minor surgery and he will be able to fully participate in all off season activities

WR 1 is shaky...WR2/WR3 is extremely deep in my opinion. As with any group and draft there will be busts, but I count almost 15 guys that should be picked after the 1st that have the talent to be good NFL contributors.

That article is dated the 15th Jan. A week or two after this Mickey Spagnola said it's now looking more likely that he will miss OTA's.

Well Mickey is wrong about as often as he is right. remember this was relatively minor surgery for a MCL.

I’m not overly keen to put my hat in the ring in support for Mickey Spagbola but he does work at the star. I think the best evidence we have is that Cooper will miss OTA’s but it’s a judgement call you can make on your own. Don’t think at this stage you can flat out say that i’m wrong though.

odds are against you since the first OTA's are 3 months away and he had the surgery a month ago. 4 months for minor MCL work is about right to be fully rehabbed by then

RB - very good
WR - weak at the top but decent depth
TE - average
OL - weak at T, strong inside
DL - Same as OL. Weak outside, strong inside
LB - solid
CB - dime a dozen. Strong every year.
S - weak after the first 2.

But they really aren't.

You're hypothesizing about a guessed injury and applying some generic recovery times to create an estimate. Mickey walked up to Cooper and asking him when he's gonna be back. Knowing Mickey works at the Star and all he does is this kinda of stuff.....I'll put odds on him being more accurate than your guess and some old info from Todd Archer.
