Stephen confirmed that the Cowboys will not change their thought process on 1 Techs in the draft. Won't use a premium pick on one.

So stop mocking Vaea and Payne to us. LOL.

There isn't a shred of doubt in my mind that they are planning OL or Hurst in the first. They think Collins is a 1 Tech and then Hurst slides in at the 3 Tech.

If they go OL, they will do what they did in 2016.......... 2014 happened, they didn't sign Murray, 2015 went sideways, they thought it was because they didn't have a real TB so they used a premium pick on Elliott.

2016 happened, 2017 went sideways after Leary walked, so they think the solution is just use the 19th pick on an OG and all will go back to normal.

I saw this on a tweet by Drew Davison as well. Same ole same old. Nothing much ever changes. I guess having a handful of 3 techs is somehow going to make the difference.

Anything before the draft is smoke. Our FO isn't smart enough to play these games. Why don't they ever just shut up before the draft so people don't have a clue as to what they are doing. I feel like them saying this eliminates a trade now.

I think Jerry and his son like to impress people with how smart they think they are. So they like to talk............. a lot.

Sorry, I'm over being depressed. Now it's sort of a burning frustration. It's clear the Jones boys don't want to win super bowls.

Yeah, it's true. These guys just don't know enough about football to be proactive, so they're strictly reactive, w/ no blueprint/a poor blueprint.

What's really sad is that they cannot even see how much difference just a decent 1 tech meant w/ TMac. They really didn't even notice how our D took a decided step back when he left, and he's not even a top tier player. Just sad.

If they truly believe Collins is a good 1T then they've lost their minds.

Unbelievablen if it holds true this team doesn't see the value in a good 1T.
General fans. That's how they think. In any 1 tech discussion, there's always someone who jumps in and proclaims how they wouldn't ever use a 1st on a 1 tech. That's because they don't understand how NFL football works.

Even if they do not take a 1 tech in the first.
That does not mean they will not take one later.
And there are some good 1 techs to be had in this draft that probably will not go in the first.

Just off the top of my head there are three that I think could be very good for this team.

Tim Settle VT
Derrick Nandi FSU
Dedrin Senat UCF

Oh and for you OG fans, Stephen also said they need a LG and could use a first round pick to get one.

they think they know more than they really know if they would hire a real football person to run the team you would see lots of difference in game day results

I wouldn't rule out LB or S either.

I believe we will see Collins used at 3 tech most of the time. If Irving is tendered with a 2nd round pick, would not be surprised to see the Colts sign him and Dallas not match. There are several 3 tech Dallas could get in rounds 2 through 5 and a number of 1 techs in rounds 3 through 7. Ash played decent at the 1 tech so I would expect him back and Crawford has shown ability to play all 4 positions on the DL. As much as we fans may believe we need to draft a 1 tech, just don't expect it until probably 4th round and unless a guy falls late in round 1 although maybe 2nd round will we see a 3 tech. We can mock it, just not going to happen.

Stephen had another tidbit re: DT:

Jones said he can’t see the Cowboys spending a 1st-round pick on a “true” nose tackle. In order to justify a 1st-round pick, he said the player would at least need to possess some 3-tech traits.
Take it for what it is. They haven't changed their approach at all, but they'll consider everybody on the board when they get up there. I'm generally happy with how they've been drafting recently anyway, so it's hard to get too worked up about the approach.

Payne can play both.

I think people are overestimating the positions impact like this is still 1990 where most teams run the ball most of the time. I hear people talk about how it would be a dramatic catalyst. I don't see it.

Give me guys that can make OL miss and get upfield to finish first and the trash can of dirt later. WE were more than fine with Price, Paea, and co. They just got hurt.

Everyone needs to read more closely. To the Cowboys, a 1-tech is a big, strong DT who can take on blocks, keep the LBs clean, make an occasional tackle, but gives you nothing in the passing game, probably leaving the field in passing situations. I agree with them, that doesn't sound like a player worth a first round pick.

Let's say you get a great 1 tech, who stuffs the run, makes about 32 tackles on the year, maybe 1-2 sacks. Is that worth a #1 pick and the cost of resigning to a second contract or only getting a few years out of that #1 pick?

Stephen Jones said "...unless that 1-tech also had some characteristics of a 3-tech." In other words, pass rushing, lateral movement, making plays, not just wrestling with OLmen.

So, if they think Vea or Payne are 1-tech guys with 3-tech ability, they'll consider pulling the trigger in round one. If not, they'll worry about run stuffers later in the draft and in free agency.

It's worked great for them, that strategy.

It should not surprise anyone that when the plan for the 1 Tech is hit the bargain bin in FA and use late round picks on them, that just about every offseason, we (and the team) talks about needing to upgrade the 1 Tech.

The difference is fans might be smarter here saying, hey, you keep messing up, so let's actually invest just a bit more than a bag of poop and an old apple core in the 1 Tech position.

This depends on what they think is a premium pick. Is a premium pick your 1st rounder? 1st and 2nd? all your day 1 and day 2 picks? if its option C then all 3 of those players will be gone by our 4th round pick.

This just gave me a tiny bit of hope that we wont pass on Payne,Tim Settle, or Derrick Nandi.
