How soon should we draft Zeke backup?

The offense took a huge hit when Zeke was suspended. Although Morris and Smith held their own, they never impacted offense as serious threats. We need a backup RB opposing defenses respect. This draft appears to have a deep crop of quality backs. Whats the earliest round we should pull the trigger on one. What's great about draft one now is we have Zeke backup ( some may say replacement ) lockdown for next four years.

I'm thinking with one the 4th rounders but admit I have no idea who whose carrying 3rd or 4th round grades.

Running backs

1. Saquon Barkley, Penn State
2. Derrius Guice, LSU
3. Ronald Jones II, USC
4. Royce Freeman, Oregon
5. Sony Michel, Georgia

A loaded class of RBs features a dynamic collection of runners with receiving skills. Barkley is the ultimate three-down back with a rugged running style and polished set of playmaking skills in the passing game. Guice is a gritty runner with a hard-nosed style and big-play ability. Jones and Michel can carry the load as runners. Teams could also find them enticing due to their potential as mismatches in the passing game. Freeman is a bruiser with the size, speed and power to thrive in a grind-it-out system.

On the bubble: Nick Chubb, Georgia; Kerryon Johnson, Auburn.

They shouldn't - they should sign a vet FA who can deal with not getting a lot of snaps, but has the ability to remain sharp.

Yes, lets spend a draft pick that will take snaps from the best RB in the league...

Rod Smith is fine as a backup

Honestly, if not in Free Agency, the back up will likely be a Undrafted FA. The Cowboys have too many needs to address before running back in the draft to worry about what would likely be the third guy in a very light rotation.

Don't get me wrong; I love the idea of not having too much of a drop off from Zeke, but OG, Safety, 1-tech DT (at least I hope, despite the answers by the FO to the contrary), and linebacker need to be addressed and done so in a meaningful way long before they think running back. I'd even put receiver before running back, but even receiver-need is low as compared to the other four positions mentioned.

They went 3-3 without Zeke last year...beat the bad teams and lost to the good ones. I think that's as much as you can ask for with a backup RB in an offense that relies heavily on having an elite RB like Zeke. If we're drafting another RB and hoping that he can be more than a backup RB and can even play on par with Zeke sometimes then that's asking a lot out of a mid-round RB (or any other backup RB for that matter).

Zeke has stay on the field if they want to have any chance at a successful season

This draft has one of strongest RB classes we've seen.

It'd be a missed oppurtunity to not take at least one of them.

Im looking at Royce Freeman or Bo Scarborough with a comp 4th or our 5th rounder.

Remember this isnt just about this year. Rod is only under contract for next season then he will be a FA. After what's gone down early on in his career, are yall wanting to sign Zeke to a long term contract after all the miles we will have put on him?

You have to think ahead. Late 4th-5th is where we should look to cash in on this insane RB class.

Personally I like Chubb. Probably one of the best pure runners in this class, and would be a dynamic runner when we want to give Zeke a rest.

He is a pure two down guy in the NFL and I think that will drop him in this class. But in a scenario you play games without Elliott, Chubb and Smith make an excellent 3 down platoon

After this combine I don't see any possibility that Chubb makes it out of the mid 2nd(full disclaimer I wouldn't take him that high). Were you wanting Chubb at 50? There's no right/wrong answer. Jeff Cauvanaugh wants Ronald Jones to drop to 50 so we can draft him haha.

The two guys I detailed as a consensus will be going much later than Chubb.

Rod Smith is fine as a backup

Is that why we saw no dropoff after Zeke suspension? He is a fine backup but he scares no one.

As good as a runner as I think he is, no I wouldnt want him that high. I want a 3 down player if Im drafting that high. I could live with him in the third.

But for that type of back, fourth would be optimal. I dont want to spend a day 2 pick on a guy I have to take off the field

Exactly....this is why I'm wondering if we can get a quality one with our 4th rounders.

The offense took a huge hit when Zeke was suspended. Although Morris and Smith held their own, they never impacted offense as serious threats.

That was more a function of Smith's ailments, the left guard position down from last year and Dak's struggles in finding and hitting receivers. As well as Zeke being off six games....

I'm thinking mid-late rounds ........

Freeman would be a very nice get. I know he was talked as a potential first rounder before the season started

Me too, and the two I like don't even have one of the most important traits I look for in a back-up RB, which is specials teams return ability.

Anyone have a sleeper RB that could help in the return game?

A 4th round draft pick is probably no better than Smith or Morris, you'd still have a drop off from Zeke, and would still basically "hold their own", same as Smith and Morris.

If I took a running back at all, it'd be a scat-back type, really fast/quick guy. Just to have a change of pace.

But would still probably not be many of those left in the 4th, either...
