The Kansas City Chiefs signed WR Sammy Watkins and LB Anthony Hitchens in free agency this week but they wanted to trade for both of them last year and tried to do so. Chiefs general manager Brett Veach spoke to the media on Wednesday and had a very cool answer, as in it’s cool that a GM is telling the fans more details about the trade process.

Veach was asked if they would have traded for Sammy Watkins if Alex Smith was still their quarterback. He said they probably couldn’t have afforded him. The reporter then asked if money weren’t an issue.

“It is interesting,” Veach said. “And we will talk about this tomorrow, but when I took over in July (after John Dorsey was fired), I got with (Chiefs director of player personnel) Mike Borgonzi and the first call I made was to Dallas about Anthony Hitchens.

“We went into last camp and there is only so much you can do once you get to July. It is here. What can you do? There is not a lot of space and rosters are set. I knew that Derrick (Johnson) was coming off another injury and just knew that we would have some potential depth issues and some issues up there.

“We went through all the teams that had linebackers with one year left on their deal. Those are teams that if they haven’t reached a deal with their player, they are on their last year so maybe they will move them. You have to resign them and it is always dangerous in free agency.

“So we identified the Christian Kirkseys, the Preston Browns, the Anthony Hitchens. But the first call we made as a new staff was to Dallas, Will McClay, and we wanted Anthony Hitchens, but they said they weren’t going to move him.

Wish we knew what was offered. If this team is really all about using exclusively the draft, that’s the kind of move they need to make, assuming the deal wasn’t bad. Horde picks and move players you aren’t going to keep.

Yeah. Last year would have been brilliant if we traded Hitch. Oh wait. It would have been a total disaster.

This board would have hammered the FO for that move.

But now ... The FO is stupid.

I think it is time for self reflection. Who exactly is stupid?

If the Cowboys traded Hitchens last year, the fans would have been screaming at the front office about it. Hitchens could play all three linebacker positions and we had Jaylon with drop-foot, Sean Lee who finds new ways to get injured every season and Damien Wilson who was arrested and likely facing a suspension (he was eventually cleared).

I understand the desire to blame the front office for the lack of success (I know I do) but trading Hitchens last season was not very realistic at that time.

Stop with that lame bs, that has nothing to do with them not trading Hitchens.

Lame BS about no SB. The comment is pretty valid.

A smart GM would have traded him in a heartbeat. He is an average LB

Get in touch with reality.

This team didn’t go to the playoffs with him last year and didn’t accomplish anything.

He was so great that the FO allowed him to sign with another team.

I don't think you can kill the FO for this... for not signing hitch before last year, I think you can (and I've admitted I'm a big hitch fan compared to most)

You would hope that if they made the trade, the FO was smart enough to find someone to take Hitchens place. It's not like Hitchens led us to an undefeated season, or a top ranked defense. We missed the playoff once again, and the defense with the great Hitchens leading it was a big reason why.

You need to get in touch with reality, the position was already in flux, and you wanted to trade the best Lb on the team at the time... glad you’re a couch jock....lol

Like who? Are you people serious...lol

I seem to remember a lot of grumbling when Hitchens went down in training camp. He was playing at a very high level and there wasn't the fan among us that didn't see this as a loss.

He was the best LB on the team but I’m out of touch?

Have you ever heard of Sean Lee?

This tells me you don’t even watch nor observe the games.

You failed.
