The decision to go with Dak had little if anything to do about who was the better QB.
The decision should have been made right after it was determined Romo needed to miss most of 2016 and put a 2nd consecutive season in jeopardy. At that point right there the team should have known, come hell or high water, that they needed to move on from Romo. It was clear he was damaged goods, so even if Dak doesn't turn out to be the QB of the future, they knew Romo's time was up.

Does anyone think if Dak doesn’t do well or any better than last year his job is in jeopardy?
I think Jerry and friends would bring in some serious competition, either in the form of a starting caliber, veteran QB, or a high draft pick.

You’d think so but without the winning wave of Dak I bet Jerry wasn’t ready to move on from Romo.

Hope your right but I’m not so sure. I think Dak will do just enough to keep the flame burning and continuing attempts to tweak around him.

We don't know yet, but we do know that Romo's injury in 2015 prompted the team to finally get serious about spending a draft resource on a QB. Remember they tried to move back into the first round to select Paxton Lynch?

I don't think they had visions of Dak being the future QB, but I do think he was drafted to solidify the back up position because they haven't been serious about filling that position in a few years.

When Romo was hurt yet again, I was ready to roll with Dak. If he tanked then we get a high draft pick and I didn't want Romo coming in trying to save the day with another 8-8 record wasting draft capital. If he worked out, then great. Either way, Romo needed to be gone.

As for who made the decision, we don't know that either, but I think it is more likely Jason made it because Romo has a strained relationship with Garrett when they used to be buddy-buddy, but still has a good relationship with Jerry. Doesn't make sense to me Garrett was advocating for Romo and that somehow upset Romo, but he is fine with the person that supposedly gave up on him. But, I could be wrong.

Must we go through this stupid dance every time?

Reporter asks coach a generic question. He answers it generically the same way he always does. The first 8-10 posts turn the question back on the coach, knowing full well he’d say the exact same thing if the question were about him.

I mean, he didn’t say anything interesting about Dak, but at least we could talk about that a little bit.
Exactly. It's not like he scheduled an interview on 60 Minutes to call out Dak for bad play. He responded to a generic question and gave the same generic answer that just about any coach would give. Nothing to see here.

Holy smoke, this thread wasn't started to discuss Dak, it was created to bash Garrett. Obviously Garrett needs to improve too, but it's laughable that fans feel they have to fabricate excuses to bash Garrett. If you have a problem with Garrett's abilities as a coach, then start a thread about Garrett's abilities as a coach rather than hiding behind another topic.

A third year QB needs to get better?

Wow. Thanks for the news flash.

How about a ninth year head coach that got his job due to a Princeton degree, family ties, and sitting on the bench during the team of the 90s that hasn't won anything?

Of course Dak needs to improve. It was his second year. He is by no means a finished product and he has flaws he needs to improve.

It’s clear as day he needs to get more consistent with his mechanics.

I believe he can and will do so. Others do not
Believe that. That’s where the disconnect lies.

Also no surprise that people are hanging on to 2016 as if it's prophecy rather than, so far, flash in the pan.

Dak has two years of play so far. One good one bad. He may turn out to be a dud but it’s simply recency bias to suggest 2016 was a flash in the pan. That’s you coming to a conclusion and then finding evidence to support your conclusion instead of the other way around

I would even challenge the assertion that it was 1 good and 1 bad.

Dak’s first half of last season was very solid. Not great. But overall good. Especially for a second year QB.

The second half stunk.

Either way I imagine we will have much more clarity after this upcoming season.

So, you believe Garrett overruled Jerry wanting to go with Romo?

So if Rodgers has an absolute fluke injury and missed some, not even most, of next year, GB needs to move on? Andrew Luck is done and the Colts are fooling themselves because he is just damaged goods?

I think Jerry likes the IDEA of Dak. It would give the old codger the belief that he's smarter than the rest of the league. However, I think the guy "dug in" on Dak is Garrett. He jettisoned the only QB that ever made him (or the rest of the organization) look competent for the almighty Dak Prescott.

Don't get me wrong, Tony's days were numbered but when the reports came out of The Star that Romo (when he returned healthy) was, by far, he better QB in practice but they wouldn't even let him compete for his job, I was done with Garrett. Who knows how well Tony would have fared for the remainder of the season but, in my opinion, Garrett robbed everyone of the best chance to win when he disregarded Romo's superior experience.

You think Belichek would have kept Brady on the bench once he was healthy, regardless of how Garrapolo would have performed in his absence? It was stupid beyond belief.

Have a feeling this thread will be closed before 5 pages.

No way, I'm riveted to this bold new theory that coaching contributed to a disappointing 2017 season. Its the kind of fresh, outside the box thinking that we don't get enough of here.
