I would trade Zack Martin for a 1st and 2nd

Yes, he is worth any of those values depending on years. 5/$70M, 6/$80M, 7/$90M all make him the highest paid G ever and would fit into the cap structured similarly to Tyron's and Frederick's deals.

Teams are not going to even sign 5 year contracts in the future unless and until there is a new labor agreement. In 2020, the current
agreement ends and all war is going to break out. I would not want to offer great big signing bonus' with that crash coming up.

Leary has the degenerative knee condition. Also wasn't All Pro year after year, and has had numerous injuries. Zack has a much higher market value...

So the doctors said when the Cowboys drafted him. To my knowledge, he has had no issues with that knee in his career.
Is Zack worth more, yes. Is he going to sign for any decent money contract for the Cowboys???

It's not a question of player loyalty, Martin is a 27 year old, 4 time All Pro guard, who's played every game in his 4 years. You can't get any better than that.

Have we forgotten what happened in 2014 with a powerhouse offensive line? Record rushing yardage and one bad call away from moving on in the playoffs. And that's with a lesser talent at running back.

A top offensive line is a huge part of winning football.

But hey, as soon as anybody is any good - Dez, Martin, Lawrence, etc. let's just trade them for more guys. Who knows, might hit on 22 Tom Bradys in the 6th round? Hey, it could happen!:lmao2:

I haven't forgotten, we had so much money tied up into our offense, it meant our defense sucked and couldn't stop a 1 legged QB.

Fair enough on Smith. After 2019 his cap hit goes down considerably.
So Tyrone cap hit goes down after 2019? That's 32 games not including playoffs until we are out of the woods. He is declining and hurt a lot. Btw, does anyone have the breakdown on each starting o line player's salary per year?

Smith's hit drops after this season. They could also cut trade him next offseason and still save $4.7 or $10 million depending on 6/1 designation. His contract is no issue.

“Ridiculous” contract? Or fair value for a top NFL guard?
I don’t think that’s an “either or” proposition. Both are true. No one would trade Martin for a below or average guard, but there are 3-4 top guards in this year’s draft, any one of whom could be considered a very good starter if not pro bowl candidate. To trade the very best and his salary for a very good guy on a rookie contract and another high pick isn’t going to reduce your wins. Comparing Martin to the other top 10 guards in the league is very different than comparing the best Tom Brady, Julio Jones, Gronkowski, or Earl Thomas/Eric Berry to their peers.

Are we a playoff team with Martin but missing the playoffs with Nelson or Hernandez at RG?

And what happens when 1 of them turns into the can’t miss prospect of Jonathan Cooper or Chance Warmack? Yes, we could easily take a significant step back if we suddenly have 2 holes at G. We don’t have a LG as is, getting rid of our best o lineman could easily bring the offense down

The question is how many mega contracts do y you sign to the oline? There is only so many a team can do and is putting the bulk of your money into this one area the right approach. Seems like it would put us in a tough situation to sign guys at other areas.

Oh I see whatever the pats do is right and if they don't it's wrong. This same team that just got trounced by the eagles who have been rebuilding their offensive line.
.

You have another team that has had the same success you'd prefer to model how a team should be constructed, coached and managed?

A player like Martin isn't easily replaceable even with those picks.
Amen. Fans act like you go to the store and simply find another "zack martin" ....it doesn't work that easily.

Hmmmm...probably not the best at his position, but he was the best player on the entire Cowboys team. His name was Hershall Walker, and that was before the salary cap.

I wouldn't do it unless the pick was high enough that I knew I could get Nelson, Wynn, or Hernandez. Those guys would be great replacements at a fraction of the cost for the next 4-5 years, along with the high 2nd round pick.

but it won't happen....even the teams that hope to draft a guard in round 1 wouldn't give up their pick for Martin and his salary.

You are so funny in the literal sense. To use the biggest trade in NFL history as reasoning for trading Martin. The Walker trade happened ONCE!! Most experts believe the NFL will NEVER see a trade like that again EVER yet you want to use that as a comparison or reasoning for trading Martin. Soon I will stop laughing, maybe.

The Cowboys didn't build that line in a single year but there are teams that started to do what the Cowboys did. Give it a couple of years and then ask that question. The short answer is last season the eagles started to rebuild their line and low and behold they win a Super Bowl. No it's not just because of that but it did help.

:hammer:

If they did trade Martin, I'd so want the same results. ;)

So would everyone else but getting 6 draft choices, 2 #1, 2 #2, 2 #3 and 6 players for Martin isn't going to happen because the Walker trade was a once in ever trade.

Name one team aside from us that has three players being paid in the top 5 of their respective positions on the line.

And then find one that has a fourth in the top 10 and about to be number 1.

And then find a team that has all of that and still does not have a starting guard on the other side.

Even teams that do spend as much as us have it spread out over 11/12/13 players.

We are so top heavy on the line that it will cripple us.

Average annual value isn’t what they get paid, though. You can sign someone to a 5/50million contract with 20 million guaranteed structured with a 1st year $5 million dollar roster bonus and 1 million base salary with 7 million dollar base salaries in year 2-4 and $30 million in year 5. Cut him after Year 3 and his AAV is still 10 million but was only paid 20 million over 3 years with cap hits of 6m, 7m, and 7m, well below his contract average.

It’s admittedly an extreme example just to prove a point, but it still shows that using AAV as a baseline is flawed. Because the cap can be so easily manipulated, it makes AAV useless in these comparisons.

Here's a little something many that have these big salary scenarios seem to forget about. When they make these scenarios with small base salaries they often forget that those base salaries have to be at least league minimum. Then there's the part they overlook that the player than has to accept these contracts and be good with be known to have a base of league minimum. The people with their scenarios seem to forget that the players have to agree to these contracts and if they were agreeable to them they would be done by now.
