Dak needs competition for the starting job it was gone last season and it showed If no one signs Johnny football after the draft we need to cause he is as good as Dak and can force him to produce
The crazy thing about our QB situation is if the Cowboys team can make Dak appear to be a starting QB can you imagine how good this team would be with a real NFL caliber QB. They could be a dynasty being held hostage by a weak armed college kid who holds onto the ball way too long.

They just have to start giving some reps to somebody else starting and training camp that's the way reality hits these guys.
I love Jason and what he's done for the organization and the team guy that he is but it's time to at least reduce his role significantly

The only problem with keeping a player that long is not having the heir apparent . Dallas also seems to not let go of players in time and eats dead cap like no other . Dallas is taking the 2nd highest hit in dead cap this year with what 22 million ? There is 21 other teams that have under a 10 mil hit and 25 15 mil and under. Dallas has a great team with solid starters .... depth is the only thing that is hurting them. But when you waste that much cap in just dead its kinda hard. Makes it worse when you think about the savings you should of from dak

Witten can't block for **** .

Blocking is actually the main reason he plays over the other TE's on the roster. He's not swift of foot ..............and yet he still manages to get open enough that even Dak can find him. Complain all you want but until Dallas drafts someone more effective than him, he's not going anywhere.

Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten isn't planning on ending his playing career any time soon.

Per Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News, Witten would like to keep playing for at least four more years.

"Hopefully I can play until I'm 40," Witten said. "Just taking it one year at a time."
How can you not love this guy but it is two years past due for the Gates/Henry transition to happen here.

You know he's still one of the top 15 TE's in the league and some might even dare argue much higher given his pro bowl selection last season. The problem isn't Witten . The "problem" is that he beats out everyone they have brought in to challenge.

too many people get stuck on stats and not actually what a player does on the field. Though with Daks style Dallas should be running more 2 TE sets

So was Gates who also is a HOFer. TE is a position which is very watered down and ranking 7th when only three are legit game changes right now is really irrelevant that he ranks 7th since those stats are pretty replaceable with a Switzer/Beaz type player who excel at the five yard curl route. Witt is a class act but its time for this staff to realize he needs to be replaced. None of those players who you claim were brought in were never brought in to challenge Witten's claim to #1 TE; nor were they given a legit chance to make that claim. The "problem" in sports is holding onto someone based on name and past production. When teams do that in any sport that team usually isn't very good.

Aikman, Emmitt, Romo, Dez, Troy Hambrick. All pushed out the door in Dallas for various reasons. Witten may want to play until 40, but that doesn't mean Stephen will want it.

I wonder if he's thinking about trying to catch Gonzales for career receptions. Maybe Fitzgerald if he gives up soon.

Then again, I'm starting to wonder if FItzgerald is trying to catch Rice.

He wants to get the record Dez currently has for TDs. He’s only about 6-7 shy

I don't mind him trying to play until he is 40, as long as it is an open competition for playing time. I don't want him starting or taking the majority of the snaps if he isn't the BPA, Right now, Hanna is a better blocker and probably a better receiver too, but Wit is taking his snaps and that's what I have a problem with!

So, Gavin Escobar and the 2nd round pick we spent on him were not an attempt?

There is no "problem in sports" here. If anything, NFL teams have huge cap incentives to replace older, more expensive players. The problem for Witten bashers is that they aren't seeing what the coaches see every day. The guy is a warrior and its going to take a talented rookie to replace him.
